Free Fisher Information: the Cramer-Rao Inequality, the Semicircular Laws, and Closedness under Weak-Star Limits

The free Fisher information satisfies the Cramer-Rao inequality with the second moment, equals d/s on the semicircular law of variance s, and has weak-star closed sublevel sets.

Statement

In the setting of Noncommutative Laws, Couplings and the Wasserstein Distance: Standing Notation, let Φ∗\Phi^{*} be the free Fisher information, let conjugate variables be as in The Free Difference Quotient and the Conjugate Variables of a Noncommutative Law §conjugate, and let scd,s\mathrm{sc}_{d,s} be the semicircular law of variance ss.

1. (Cramer-Rao inequality) If λ∈Σd\lambda\in\Sigma_{d} has conjugate variables, then M(λ)>0M(\lambda)>0 and Φ∗(λ) M(λ)≥d2\Phi^{*}(\lambda)\,M(\lambda)\ge d^{2}.

2. (Semicircular laws) For every real s>0s>0, scd,s\mathrm{sc}_{d,s} has conjugate variables (s−1x1^,…,s−1xd^)\bigl(s^{-1}\widehat{x_{1}},\dots,s^{-1}\widehat{x_{d}}\bigr), the classes being taken in Hscd,s\mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{sc}_{d,s}}, and Φ∗(scd,s)=d/s\Phi^{*}(\mathrm{sc}_{d,s})=d/s.

3. (Closedness under weak-star limits) Let c≥0c\ge0 be real, and let (λk)k∈N(\lambda_{k})_{k\in\mathbb{N}} be a sequence in Σd\Sigma_{d} that converges weak-star to λ∈Σd\lambda\in\Sigma_{d}, such that every λk\lambda_{k} has conjugate variables and Φ∗(λk)≤c\Phi^{*}(\lambda_{k})\le c. Then λ\lambda has conjugate variables and Φ∗(λ)≤c\Phi^{*}(\lambda)\le c.
