The Line t ↦ x+th and Values of a Function along a Line in ℝⁿ, as Functions

For points x and h of ℝⁿ and a set J of reals, the line t ↦ x+th and the values t ↦ F(x+th) of a map F along it are maps on J.

Statement

In the setting of Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation, let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, x,h∈Rnx,h\in\mathbb{R}^{n} and J⊆RJ\subseteq\mathbb{R}, with the operations of Euclidean Space Rn\mathbb{R}^n: n-Tuples of Real Numbers with Their Componentwise Operations (iv); maps and their values are those of Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another (iii) and Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another (ii).

The line as a map. There is a map γ:J→Rn\gamma:J\to\mathbb{R}^{n} with

γ(t)=x+thfor every t∈J.\gamma(t)=x+th\qquad\text{for every }t\in J.

Values along a line. Let U⊆RnU\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}, let YY be a class and let F:U→YF:U\to Y be a map with x+th∈Ux+th\in U for every t∈Jt\in J. There is a map φ:J→Y\varphi:J\to Y with

φ(t)=F(x+th)for every t∈J.\varphi(t)=F(x+th)\qquad\text{for every }t\in J.
