Lebesgue Measure on ℝ^{m+n} as the Product of Lebesgue Measures on ℝ^m and ℝ^n

Assuming dependent choice, Lebesgue measure on ℝ¹ is the copy of Lebesgue measure on ℝ, and Lebesgue measure on ℝ^{m+n} is the image of the product of Lebesgue measures on ℝ^m and ℝ^n under concatenation; hence integrals over ℝ^{m+n} are iterated integrals, for nonnegative and for integrable functions.

Statement

In the setting of Product Measures, Lebesgue Measure on ℝⁿ and Image Measures: Notation, assume the axiom of dependent choice, and let m,n∈Nm,n\in\mathbb{N}.

Dimension one. For every B∈B(R)B\in\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}), τ[B]∈B(R1)\tau[B]\in\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{1}) and

λ1(τ[B])=λ(B).\lambda_{1}(\tau[B])=\lambda(B).

Concatenation. The image of λm⊗λn\lambda_{m}\otimes\lambda_{n} under ι\iota is λm+n\lambda_{m+n} (ι\iota is measurable by Borel Sets of ℝ^{m+n} and the Product σ-Algebra of ℝ^m and ℝ^n (i); λm\lambda_{m} and λn\lambda_{n} are σ\sigma-finite by Lebesgue Measure on ℝⁿ: σ-Finiteness, Bounded Sets, Open Sets and Coordinate Hyperplanes (i)):

(λm⊗λn)∘ι−1=λm+n.(\lambda_{m}\otimes\lambda_{n})\circ\iota^{-1}=\lambda_{m+n}.

Images of product-measurable sets. For every E∈B(Rm)⊗B(Rn)E\in\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{m})\otimes\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{n}), ι[E]∈B(Rm+n)\iota[E]\in\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{m+n}) and

λm+n(ι[E])=(λm⊗λn)(E).\lambda_{m+n}(\iota[E])=(\lambda_{m}\otimes\lambda_{n})(E).

Tonelli's formula. Let f∈M+(Rm+n,B(Rm+n))f\in\mathcal{M}^{+}(\mathbb{R}^{m+n},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{m+n})). For every ξ∈Rm\xi\in\mathbb{R}^{m} the function η↦f(ι(ξ,η))\eta\mapsto f(\iota(\xi,\eta)) lies in M+(Rn,B(Rn))\mathcal{M}^{+}(\mathbb{R}^{n},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{n})), the function ξ↦∫Rnf(ι(ξ,η)) dλn(η)\xi\mapsto\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}f(\iota(\xi,\eta))\,d\lambda_{n}(\eta) lies in M+(Rm,B(Rm))\mathcal{M}^{+}(\mathbb{R}^{m},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{m})), and

∫Rm+nf dλm+n=∫Rm(∫Rnf(ι(ξ,η)) dλn(η))dλm(ξ).\int_{\mathbb{R}^{m+n}}f\,d\lambda_{m+n}=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{m}}\Bigl(\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}f(\iota(\xi,\eta))\,d\lambda_{n}(\eta)\Bigr)d\lambda_{m}(\xi).

Fubini's formula. Let f∈L1(λm+n)f\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda_{m+n}). The set

N={ξ∈Rm:the function η↦f(ι(ξ,η)) does not lie in L1(λn)}N=\{\xi\in\mathbb{R}^{m}:\text{the function }\eta\mapsto f(\iota(\xi,\eta))\text{ does not lie in }\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda_{n})\}

lies in B(Rm)\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{m}) and λm(N)=0\lambda_{m}(N)=0; the function g:Rm→Rg:\mathbb{R}^{m}\to\mathbb{R} with g(ξ)=∫Rnf(ι(ξ,η)) dλn(η)g(\xi)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}f(\iota(\xi,\eta))\,d\lambda_{n}(\eta) for ξ∈Rm∖N\xi\in\mathbb{R}^{m}\setminus N and g(ξ)=0g(\xi)=0 for ξ∈N\xi\in N lies in L1(λm)\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda_{m}); and

∫Rm+nf dλm+n=∫Rmg dλm.\int_{\mathbb{R}^{m+n}}f\,d\lambda_{m+n}=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{m}}g\,d\lambda_{m}.
