Closed–Open Regularity of a Finite Borel Measure on a Metric Space

For a finite Borel measure on a metric space, every Borel set lies between a closed set and an open set whose difference has arbitrarily small measure.

Statement

In the setting of Radon Measures on Locally Compact Metric Spaces: Standing Notation, let (X,d)(X,d) be a metric space and let μ\mu be a finite Borel measure on XX.

Closed–open approximation. For every B∈B(X)B\in\mathcal{B}(X) and every real number ε>0\varepsilon>0 there are a closed set F⊆XF\subseteq X and an open set V⊆XV\subseteq X with F⊆B⊆VF\subseteq B\subseteq V and

μ(V∖F)<ε.\mu(V\setminus F)<\varepsilon .
