Intervals of the Real Line

Defines an interval of the real line as a subset containing every number between two of its points, and fixes the notation for bounded intervals and rays.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R}.

A subset I⊆RI\subseteq\mathbb{R} is an interval if y∈Iy\in I for all x,y,z∈Rx,y,z\in\mathbb{R} with x,z∈Ix,z\in I and x≤y≤zx\le y\le z.

The closed interval [a,b][a,b], the open interval (a,b)(a,b) and the half-open intervals [a,b)[a,b) and (a,b](a,b] are the subsets

[a,b]={x∈R:a≤x≤b},(a,b)={x∈R:a<x<b},[a,b)={x∈R:a≤x<b},(a,b]={x∈R:a<x≤b}[a,b]=\{x\in\mathbb{R}:a\le x\le b\},\qquad (a,b)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}:a<x<b\},\qquad [a,b)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}:a\le x<b\},\qquad (a,b]=\{x\in\mathbb{R}:a<x\le b\}

of R\mathbb{R}.

The rays are the subsets

(a,∞)={x∈R:a<x},[a,∞)={x∈R:a≤x},(−∞,b)={x∈R:x<b},(−∞,b]={x∈R:x≤b}(a,\infty)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}:a<x\},\qquad [a,\infty)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}:a\le x\},\qquad (-\infty,b)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}:x<b\},\qquad (-\infty,b]=\{x\in\mathbb{R}:x\le b\}

of R\mathbb{R}. In this notation ∞\infty and −∞-\infty are symbols only; they denote no element of R\mathbb{R} or of any set.
