Arithmetic on [0,∞]: Bookkeeping

Elements of [0,∞]×[0,∞] satisfying a condition on their components are exactly the ordered pairs of elements of [0,∞] satisfying it; and the real sum and the real product of two nonnegative real numbers lie in [0,∞].

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let R\mathbb{R}, its order ≤\le, its sum, its product and its element 00 be as in The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness (ii), and let [0,∞][0,\infty] be as in The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii). Let [0,∞]×[0,∞][0,\infty]\times[0,\infty] be the Cartesian product, (u,v)(u,v) the ordered pair of sets uu and vv, and p1,p2p_{1},p_{2} the components of an ordered pair pp.

For every condition φ\varphi on two classes and every set pp, with p1,p2p_{1},p_{2} the components of pp (meaningful when pp is an ordered pair, in particular when pp lies in the product): p∈[0,∞]×[0,∞]p\in[0,\infty]\times[0,\infty] and φ(p1,p2)\varphi(p_{1},p_{2}) hold if and only if there are sets uu and vv with u,v∈[0,∞]u,v\in[0,\infty], p=(u,v)p=(u,v) and φ(u,v)\varphi(u,v).

If x,y∈Rx,y\in\mathbb{R}, 0≤x0\le x and 0≤y0\le y, then the sum x+yx+y formed in R\mathbb{R} lies in [0,∞][0,\infty].

If x,y∈Rx,y\in\mathbb{R}, 0≤x0\le x and 0≤y0\le y, then the product xyxy formed in R\mathbb{R} lies in [0,∞][0,\infty].
