The Distance on the Real Numbers Is a Map with Values the Absolute Differences

The distance on the real numbers is a map from pairs of reals to reals whose value at (s, t) is |s - t|, and its elements are exactly the pairs ((s, t), |s - t|) with s and t real.

Statement

In the setting of The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness, let dRd_{\mathbb{R}} be the distance on R\mathbb{R}, with the difference s−ts-t and the absolute value ∣s−t∣|s-t| for s,t∈Rs,t\in\mathbb{R}.

There is exactly one map f:R×R→Rf:\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} with f(s,t)=∣s−t∣f(s,t)=|s-t| for all s,t∈Rs,t\in\mathbb{R}, and it is the distance dRd_{\mathbb{R}}.

For all sets ss, tt and zz: ((s,t),z)∈dR((s,t),z)\in d_{\mathbb{R}} if and only if s∈Rs\in\mathbb{R}, t∈Rt\in\mathbb{R} and z=∣s−t∣z=|s-t|.
