The Convex Hull Consists of the Convex Combinations of Finitely Many Points

The convex hull of a subset S of RnR^n is the set of all convex combinations of finitely many points of S.

Statement

In the setting of Convex Sets in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, with the convex hull conv⁡\operatorname{conv} and the standard simplices ΔN\Delta_{N}, let S⊆RnS\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}.

Convex hull as convex combinations. conv⁡S\operatorname{conv}S is the set of all convex combinations of finitely many points of SS:

conv⁡S={∑k=1Ntkxk: N∈N, x1,…,xN∈S, t∈ΔN}.\operatorname{conv}S=\Bigl\{\sum_{k=1}^{N}t_{k}x_{k}:\ N\in\mathbb{N},\ x_{1},\dots,x_{N}\in S,\ t\in\Delta_{N}\Bigr\}.
