Integer and Rational Brackets as Typed Terms

The integer bracket [s,t] of terms of type N and the rational bracket [s,t] of a term of type Z and a term of type N are terms of type Z and Q under a predicative guard.

Statement

This helper adopts the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices; (i) and (ii) are statements of the metatheory about expressions. Let k≥0k\ge0, the distinct set variables x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, the parameters with their fixed values, and assignments be as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i); let γ\gamma be a guard; and let terms under γ\gamma and their values, and terms of type AA under γ\gamma for a class AA, be as in Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (i) and Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (ii). The brackets [a,b][a,b] and [x,m][x,m] below are equivalence classes, not intervals of R\mathbb{R}, and their entries are elements of N\mathbb{N}, respectively of Z\mathbb{Z} and N\mathbb{N}, not their images in R\mathbb{R}.

Let P=N×NP=\mathbb{N}\times\mathbb{N}, ∼\sim and the classes [a,b][a,b] for a,b∈Na,b\in\mathbb{N} be as in Construction of the Integers: Pairs of Natural Numbers up to Equal Differences, with Sum, Product, Negation and Order (i), with Z=P/∼\mathbb{Z}=P/{\sim} as in The Integers (i), and let π∼\pi_{\sim} be the canonical projection of PP to P/∼P/{\sim}. Let ss and tt be terms of type N\mathbb{N} under γ\gamma, and let [s,t][s,t] stand for the term π∼((s,t))\pi_{\sim}((s,t)) of Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (iii), written with a parameter whose value is π∼\pi_{\sim}. Then the value of [s,t][s,t] under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma is the class [a,b][a,b], where aa and bb are the values of ss and tt, and [s,t][s,t] is a term of type Z\mathbb{Z} under γ\gamma.

Let Q=Z×NQ=\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{N}, ≈\approx and the classes [x,m][x,m] for x∈Zx\in\mathbb{Z} and m∈Nm\in\mathbb{N} be as in Construction of the Rationals: Pairs of an Integer and a Natural Number up to Equal Ratios, with Sum, Product, Negation and Order (i), with Q=Q/≈\mathbb{Q}=Q/{\approx} as in The Rational Numbers (i), and let π≈\pi_{\approx} be the canonical projection of QQ to Q/≈Q/{\approx}. Let ss be a term of type Z\mathbb{Z} and tt a term of type N\mathbb{N} under γ\gamma, and let [s,t][s,t] stand for the term π≈((s,t))\pi_{\approx}((s,t)) of Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (iii), written with a parameter whose value is π≈\pi_{\approx}. Then the value of [s,t][s,t] under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma is the class [x,m][x,m], where xx and mm are the values of ss and tt, and [s,t][s,t] is a term of type Q\mathbb{Q} under γ\gamma.
