Characterizations and Examples of Normal Subgroups

A subgroup is normal exactly when its left and right cosets agree, or when it equals each of its conjugates; every subgroup of an abelian group is normal, and so are the trivial subgroup and the whole group.

Statement

In the setting of Groups: Standing Notation, let GG be a group and NN a subgroup of GG.

Normality by cosets. NN is normal if and only if its left and right cosets agree:

gN=Ngfor every g∈G.gN=Ng\qquad\text{for every } g\in G.

Normality by conjugates. NN is normal if and only if it equals each of its conjugates:

{gng−1:n∈N}=Nfor every g∈G.\{gng^{-1}:n\in N\}=N\qquad\text{for every } g\in G.

Abelian groups. If GG is abelian, then NN is normal.

Trivial subgroups. The subgroups {e}\{e\} and GG of GG (Subgroup Criterion and Basic Examples (iv)) are normal.
