Sets Cut Out by Linear Inequalities in Rn\mathbb{R}^n Are Closed

The set where a linear inequality w·y ≤ β holds is closed in RnR^n, and so is the set where a whole family of such inequalities with a common bound holds.

Statement

In the setting of Separation in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation.

One inequality. For every w∈Rnw\in\mathbb{R}^{n} and β∈R\beta\in\mathbb{R}, the set {y∈Rn:w⋅y≤β}\{y\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:w\cdot y\le\beta\} is closed.

Many inequalities. For every W⊆RnW\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} and β∈R\beta\in\mathbb{R}, the set

{y∈Rn: w⋅y≤β for every w∈W}\{y\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:\ w\cdot y\le\beta\text{ for every }w\in W\}

is closed.

Hyperplanes and closed half-spaces. For every a∈Rna\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with a≠0a\neq0 and every α∈R\alpha\in\mathbb{R}, the hyperplane H(a,α)H(a,\alpha) and the closed half-spaces H≤(a,α)H^{\le}(a,\alpha) and H≥(a,α)H^{\ge}(a,\alpha) are closed.
