Permutations of [n] are Maps [n] → [n], and Values of the Determinant are Real Numbers

States that every σ ∈ SnS_n is a map [n]→[n] and that det A ∈ ℝ for every real n×n matrix A.

Statement

In the setting of The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness, let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} be a natural number, with [n][n] as in Intervals of Natural Numbers §segment, the set SnS_{n} of permutations of [n][n] as in Permutations of a Set and the Set of Permutations of [n] §permutations, the set Mn(R)\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) of square real matrices, and the determinant det⁡\det; and maps are as defined there.

For every σ∈Sn\sigma\in S_{n}, σ\sigma is a set and σ\sigma is a map σ:[n]→[n]\sigma:[n]\to[n].

For every A∈Mn(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), det⁡A∈R\det A\in\mathbb{R}.
