The Dual of Cc(X)C_c(X): Standing Notation

Standing notation for the duality between continuous functions with compact support and finite signed Borel measures on a metric space: the dual space of Cc(X)C_c(X) with its dual norm, the space M(X) with the total variation norm, and the pointwise order of real functions.

Statement

Base. This setting extends Radon Measures on Locally Compact Metric Spaces: Standing Notation: its conventions and notation are in force.

The dual of Cc(X)C_{c}(X). For a metric space (X,d)(X,d), Cc(X)C_{c}(X) carries the sum, the scalar multiplication and the uniform norm ∥⋅∥u\|\cdot\|_{u} of The Space of Continuous Functions with Compact Support and the Uniform Norm (ii) and The Space of Continuous Functions with Compact Support and the Uniform Norm (iii), under which it is a real normed space by The Continuous Functions with Compact Support Form a Real Normed Space under the Uniform Norm (ii). Cc(X)∗C_{c}(X)^{*} denotes its dual space, and ∥Λ∥∗\|\Lambda\|_{*} the dual norm of Λ∈Cc(X)∗\Lambda\in C_{c}(X)^{*}. Background: The Continuous Functions with Compact Support Form a Real Normed Space under the Uniform Norm and The Nonnegative Bounds of a Bounded Linear Functional Have an Infimum, Which Is a Bound.

Finite signed Borel measures. For a metric space (X,d)(X,d), M(X)M(X) denotes the set M(X,B(X))M(X,\mathcal{B}(X)) of finite signed Borel measures on XX, and ∥ν∥\|\nu\| is the total variation norm of ν∈M(X)\nu\in M(X).

Order. For real functions f,gf,g on a metric space XX, f≤gf\le g means f(x)≤g(x)f(x)\le g(x) for every x∈Xx\in X, and f≥0f\ge0 means f(x)≥0f(x)\ge0 for every x∈Xx\in X; a real number cc in such a comparison stands for the constant function with value cc.

Use. The background facts carried by (ii), and their elementary consequences, are used without further citation.
