The Distance to a Subset of a Metric Space: Bounds, the Lipschitz Estimate, Continuity, and Vanishing Exactly on the Closure

The distance to a nonempty subset is a nonnegative lower bound of the point distances that they approximate, is 1-Lipschitz and hence continuous, vanishes exactly at the closure points, and is positive off a closed set.

Statement

In the setting of Metric Spaces: Balls, the Metric Topology, and the Real and Complex Numbers as Metric Spaces and Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity, let (X,d)(X,d) be a metric space and let A⊆XA\subseteq X be nonempty, with the distance dist⁡(x,A)\operatorname{dist}(x,A) from a point x∈Xx\in X to AA.

Bounds. For every x∈Xx\in X, 0≤dist⁡(x,A)≤d(x,a)0\le\operatorname{dist}(x,A)\le d(x,a) for every a∈Aa\in A; and for every real number r>dist⁡(x,A)r>\operatorname{dist}(x,A) there is a∈Aa\in A with d(x,a)<rd(x,a)<r.

Lipschitz estimate. For all x,y∈Xx,y\in X,

∣dist⁡(x,A)−dist⁡(y,A)∣≤d(x,y).\bigl|\operatorname{dist}(x,A)-\operatorname{dist}(y,A)\bigr|\le d(x,y).

Continuity. For every K⊆XK\subseteq X, the function K→RK\to\mathbb{R}, x↦dist⁡(x,A)x\mapsto\operatorname{dist}(x,A), is continuous on KK.

Vanishing. For x∈Xx\in X, dist⁡(x,A)=0\operatorname{dist}(x,A)=0 if and only if xx is a closure point of AA.

Positivity off a closed set. If AA is closed in (X,Td)(X,\mathcal{T}_{d}) and x∈X∖Ax\in X\setminus A, then dist⁡(x,A)>0\operatorname{dist}(x,A)>0.
