Independent Random Elements: Preimages, Functions and Blocks

Independence of random elements is tested on preimages of Borel sets, is preserved by measurable functions, and passes to disjoint blocks of an independent finite family of random variables.

Statement

In the setting of Probability Spaces: Notation, let JJ be a set.

Independence tested on preimages. Let ((Sj,dj))j∈J((S_{j},d_{j}))_{j\in J} be a family of metric spaces and let (Xj)j∈J(X_{j})_{j\in J} be a family in which each XjX_{j} is a random element of SjS_{j}. Then (Xj)j∈J(X_{j})_{j\in J} is independent if and only if for every n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, all distinct j1,…,jn∈Jj_{1},\dots,j_{n}\in J and all B1∈B(Sj1),…,Bn∈B(Sjn)B_{1}\in\mathcal{B}(S_{j_{1}}),\dots,B_{n}\in\mathcal{B}(S_{j_{n}}),

P(Xj1∈B1,…,Xjn∈Bn)=∏k=1nP(Xjk∈Bk).P(X_{j_{1}}\in B_{1},\dots,X_{j_{n}}\in B_{n})=\prod_{k=1}^{n}P(X_{j_{k}}\in B_{k}).

Independence of two random elements tested on preimages. Let XX and YY be random elements of metric spaces (S,d)(S,d) and (T,e)(T,e). Then XX and YY are independent if and only if

P(X∈B,Β Y∈Bβ€²)=P(X∈B) P(Y∈Bβ€²)(B∈B(S),Β Bβ€²βˆˆB(T)).P(X\in B,\ Y\in B')=P(X\in B)\,P(Y\in B')\qquad(B\in\mathcal{B}(S),\ B'\in\mathcal{B}(T)).

Measurable functions preserve independence. Let ((Sj,dj))j∈J((S_{j},d_{j}))_{j\in J} and ((Tj,ej))j∈J((T_{j},e_{j}))_{j\in J} be families of metric spaces, let (Xj)j∈J(X_{j})_{j\in J} be a family in which each XjX_{j} is a random element of SjS_{j}, and let (gj)j∈J(g_{j})_{j\in J} be a family of functions gj:Sjβ†’Tjg_{j}:S_{j}\to T_{j}, each B(Sj)/B(Tj)\mathcal{B}(S_{j})/\mathcal{B}(T_{j})-measurable. If (Xj)j∈J(X_{j})_{j\in J} is independent, then so is the family (gj(Xj))j∈J(g_{j}(X_{j}))_{j\in J} of random elements of the TjT_{j} (Random Vectors: Coordinates, Functions, Pairs and Almost-Sure Equality (ii)).

Measurable functions of an independent pair. Let XX and YY be random elements of metric spaces (S,d)(S,d) and (T,e)(T,e), let (S′,d′)(S',d') and (T′,e′)(T',e') be metric spaces, and let g:S→S′g:S\to S' and h:T→T′h:T\to T' be B(S)/B(S′)\mathcal{B}(S)/\mathcal{B}(S')- and B(T)/B(T′)\mathcal{B}(T)/\mathcal{B}(T')-measurable. If XX and YY are independent, then so are g(X)g(X) and h(Y)h(Y).

Disjoint blocks. Let m,n∈Nm,n\in\mathbb{N} with m<nm<n, and let (Xk)k∈[n](X_{k})_{k\in[n]} be an independent family of random variables. Let U:Ξ©β†’RmU:\Omega\to\mathbb{R}^{m} and V:Ξ©β†’Rnβˆ’mV:\Omega\to\mathbb{R}^{n-m} be the functions

U(Ο‰)=(X1(Ο‰),…,Xm(Ο‰)),V(Ο‰)=(Xm+1(Ο‰),…,Xn(Ο‰))(Ο‰βˆˆΞ©)U(\omega)=(X_{1}(\omega),\dots,X_{m}(\omega)),\qquad V(\omega)=(X_{m+1}(\omega),\dots,X_{n}(\omega))\qquad(\omega\in\Omega)

(Component Maps of a Map into Rq\mathbb{R}^{q}, Entry Maps of a Map into Matrices, and Maps Assembled from Them (iii)), which are random vectors by Random Vectors: Coordinates, Functions, Pairs and Almost-Sure Equality (i). Then UU and VV are independent.
