Predicativity of Expressions with Abbreviations, and Symbol-Free Forms of the Basic Defined Set Symbols

An expression written with abbreviations and quantifying over sets only is predicative; a set described uniquely under a guard can be eliminated existentially or universally; and the empty set, pairs, ordered pairs, unions, power sets, class terms, function values and values of binary operations have explicit symbol-free forms.

Statement

In the setting of Class Theory NBG: the Axioms, Standing Conventions and Basic Notation, formulas may be written with abbreviations, and predicative is then meant as in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §defined-symbols. In each clause below, distinct letters denote distinct variables, and a variable displayed in a clause occurs in the formulas of that clause only where displayed. The letters uu, vv, ww, xx, zz, pp and tt denote set variables. The formulas may have further free variables of either kind, their parameters; every hypothesis and every conclusion is meant for all values of the parameters, sets being assigned to set variables and classes to class variables.

This clause is a statement of the metatheory about expressions. Every expression written with abbreviations as in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations §defined-symbols in which no quantifier is applied to a class variable, counting the quantifiers inside the formulas of the class abstractions written in it and counting ∀X\forall X as a quantifier applied to XX, is predicative.

Let k≥0k\ge0 be a metatheoretic number, let v1,…,vkv_{1},\dots,v_{k} be set variables, and let θ(z,v1,…,vk)\theta(z,v_{1},\dots,v_{k}) and γ(v1,…,vk)\gamma(v_{1},\dots,v_{k}) be predicative formulas such that, for all sets v1,…,vkv_{1},\dots,v_{k} satisfying γ\gamma, exactly one set zz satisfies θ(z,v1,…,vk)\theta(z,v_{1},\dots,v_{k}); write τ(v1,…,vk)\tau(v_{1},\dots,v_{k}) for it. Let φ(z,v1,…,vk)\varphi(z,v_{1},\dots,v_{k}) be a predicative formula; γ\gamma, θ\theta and φ\varphi share their parameters, and a condition on the parameters belongs in γ\gamma. Below, φ(τ(v1,…,vk),v1,…,vk)\varphi(\tau(v_{1},\dots,v_{k}),v_{1},\dots,v_{k}) is φ(z,v1,…,vk)\varphi(z,v_{1},\dots,v_{k}) for the set z=τ(v1,…,vk)z=\tau(v_{1},\dots,v_{k}). Then for all sets v1,…,vkv_{1},\dots,v_{k} satisfying γ\gamma,

φ(τ(v1,…,vk),v1,…,vk)  ⟺  ∃z (θ∧φ)  ⟺  ∀z (θ⇒φ),\varphi(\tau(v_{1},\dots,v_{k}),v_{1},\dots,v_{k})\iff\exists z\,(\theta\wedge\varphi)\iff\forall z\,(\theta\Rightarrow\varphi),

and the formulas γ∧∃z (θ∧φ)\gamma\wedge\exists z\,(\theta\wedge\varphi) and γ⇒∀z (θ⇒φ)\gamma\Rightarrow\forall z\,(\theta\Rightarrow\varphi) are predicative.

For every set zz: z=∅z=\emptyset, the empty set, if and only if ∀w (w∉z)\forall w\,(w\notin z).

For all sets uu, vv and zz: z={u,v}z=\{u,v\}, the unordered pair, if and only if ∀w (w∈z⇔(w=u∨w=v))\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow(w=u\vee w=v)); and z={u}z=\{u\}, the singleton, if and only if ∀w (w∈z⇔w=u)\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow w=u).

For all sets uu, vv and zz: z=(u,v)z=(u,v), the ordered pair, if and only if

∀w (w∈z⇔(∀t (t∈w⇔t=u)∨∀t (t∈w⇔(t=u∨t=v)))).\forall w\,\bigl(w\in z\Leftrightarrow(\forall t\,(t\in w\Leftrightarrow t=u)\vee\forall t\,(t\in w\Leftrightarrow(t=u\vee t=v)))\bigr).

For all sets uu and vv and every class AA, a set AA included: (u,v)∈A(u,v)\in A if and only if ∃p (p=(u,v)∧p∈A)\exists p\,(p=(u,v)\wedge p\in A), where p=(u,v)p=(u,v) has the form given by the clause ordered-pair. In particular, for a relation RR, u R vu\,R\,v if and only if ∃p (p=(u,v)∧p∈R)\exists p\,(p=(u,v)\wedge p\in R).

For all sets uu and zz: z=⋃uz=\bigcup u, the union, if and only if ∀w (w∈z⇔∃v (w∈v∧v∈u))\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow\exists v\,(w\in v\wedge v\in u)); and z=P(u)z=\mathcal{P}(u), the power set, if and only if ∀w (w∈z⇔∀v (v∈w⇒v∈u))\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow\forall v\,(v\in w\Rightarrow v\in u)).

Let m≥0m\ge0 be a metatheoretic number, let ψ(x,Y1,…,Ym)\psi(x,Y_{1},\dots,Y_{m}) be a predicative formula with parameters Y1,…,YmY_{1},\dots,Y_{m} of either kind, and let TT be the class abstraction {x:ψ(x,Y1,…,Ym)}\{x:\psi(x,Y_{1},\dots,Y_{m})\}. For every set uu and every class AA: u∈Tu\in T if and only if ψ(u,Y1,…,Ym)\psi(u,Y_{1},\dots,Y_{m}); A=TA=T if and only if ∀w (w∈A⇔ψ(w,Y1,…,Ym))\forall w\,(w\in A\Leftrightarrow\psi(w,Y_{1},\dots,Y_{m})); and A∈TA\in T if and only if ∃z (∀w (w∈z⇔w∈A)∧ψ(z,Y1,…,Ym))\exists z\,(\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow w\in A)\wedge\psi(z,Y_{1},\dots,Y_{m})).

For all sets uu, vv and zz, with the intersection, union and difference: z=u∩vz=u\cap v if and only if ∀w (w∈z⇔(w∈u∧w∈v))\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow(w\in u\wedge w\in v)); z=u∪vz=u\cup v if and only if ∀w (w∈z⇔(w∈u∨w∈v))\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow(w\in u\vee w\in v)); and z=u∖vz=u\setminus v if and only if ∀w (w∈z⇔(w∈u∧w∉v))\forall w\,(w\in z\Leftrightarrow(w\in u\wedge w\notin v)).

Let FF be a function. For all sets uu and zz: uu lies in the domain dom⁡F\operatorname{dom}F and zz is the value F(u)F(u) if and only if (u,z)∈F(u,z)\in F.

Let aa be a set and ∗\ast a binary operation on aa. For all sets uu, vv and zz: u∈au\in a, v∈av\in a and z=u∗vz=u\ast v, in the notation for its values, if and only if ((u,v),z)∈∗((u,v),z)\in\ast.
