Counting Maps, Injections, Bijections and Permutations

Between finite sets with k and n elements there are nkn^k maps and (n)kn)_k injections, n! bijections when k = n and none otherwise, and there are n! permutations of [n].

Statement

In the setting of Finite Combinatorics: Notation, let AA and BB be finite sets with #A=k\#A=k and #B=n\#B=n.

Maps.

#(BA)=nk.\#(B^{A})=n^{k}.

Injections.

#Inj⁡(A,B)=(n)k.\#\operatorname{Inj}(A,B)=(n)_{k}.

Bijections. If k=nk=n, then #Bij⁡(A,B)=n!\#\operatorname{Bij}(A,B)=n!; if k≠nk\neq n, then Bij⁡(A,B)=∅\operatorname{Bij}(A,B)=\emptyset.

Permutations.

#Sn=n!.\#S_{n}=n!.
