Cancelling an Added Real, and the Product of a Real with a Negative

In the real numbers, a summand added to both sides of an equation can be cancelled, and the product of a real number with the negative of another is the negative of their product.

Statement

This lemma adopts the setting of The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness: R\mathbb{R}, its operations ++ and ⋅\cdot, and its elements 00 and 11 are as in The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness (ii); for x,y∈Rx,y\in\mathbb{R}, −y-y is the negative of yy and x−yx-y is the difference of xx and yy. Let xx, yy and zz be real numbers.

If x+z=y+zx+z=y+z, then x=yx=y.

x⋅(−y)=−(x⋅y)x\cdot(-y)=-(x\cdot y).
