At a Point of Differentiability, the Subdifferential of a Convex Function on an Open Convex Subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n Is the Gradient Alone

If a convex function on an open convex set is differentiable at a point, its gradient there is a subgradient, and it is the only one.

Statement

In the setting of Convex Functions on Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let U⊆RnU\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} be open and convex, let f:U→Rf:U\to\mathbb{R} be convex, and let x∈Ux\in U be a point at which ff is differentiable, with gradient ∇f(x)\nabla f(x), defined by The Derivative Is the Jacobian Matrix, and Is Unique (i).

The subdifferential is the gradient. The subdifferential of ff at xx is

∂f(x)={∇f(x)}.\partial f(x)=\{\nabla f(x)\}.
