Projection, Evaluation and Currying Maps

The two projections of a Cartesian product, the evaluation map of a set of maps, and the curried form of a map on a product exist as maps and are unique.

Statement

This lemma adopts the setting of Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation. Let XX, YY and II be sets, with the Cartesian products X×YX\times Y and X×IX\times I, the set YIY^{I} of maps from II to YY, the components p1p_{1} and p2p_{2} of an ordered pair pp, and maps and their values as in Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation §maps, so that g(x,y)g(x,y) stands for g((x,y))g((x,y)).

There is exactly one map π1:X×Y→X\pi_{1}:X\times Y\to X with π1(x,y)=x\pi_{1}(x,y)=x for all x∈Xx\in X and y∈Yy\in Y, and exactly one map π2:X×Y→Y\pi_{2}:X\times Y\to Y with π2(x,y)=y\pi_{2}(x,y)=y for all x∈Xx\in X and y∈Yy\in Y. For every p∈X×Yp\in X\times Y, π1(p)=p1\pi_{1}(p)=p_{1} and π2(p)=p2\pi_{2}(p)=p_{2}.

There is exactly one map ev:YI×I→Y\mathrm{ev}:Y^{I}\times I\to Y with ev(f,i)=f(i)\mathrm{ev}(f,i)=f(i) for all f∈YIf\in Y^{I} and i∈Ii\in I.

For every map g:X×I→Yg:X\times I\to Y there is exactly one map h:X→YIh:X\to Y^{I} with h(x)(i)=g(x,i)h(x)(i)=g(x,i) for all x∈Xx\in X and i∈Ii\in I.
