Arithmetic of Addition on Omega: Recursion Rules, Associativity, Commutativity, Cancellation and Compatibility with the Order

Addition on omega satisfies m + 0 = 0 + m = m and both successor rules, is associative, commutative and cancellative, is strictly compatible with the order, m ≤ n exactly when n = m + j for some j, and a sum is zero only when both terms are.

Statement

In the setting of Class Theory NBG: the Axioms, Standing Conventions and Basic Notation, let ω\omega and 00 be as in The Class Omega of Natural Numbers with Zero §omega and The Class Omega of Natural Numbers with Zero §zero, let S(x)S(x) denote the successor of a set xx, let ++ be the addition on ω\omega, and let ≤\le and << be the order and the strict order on ω\omega. Let k,m,n∈ωk,m,n\in\omega.

m+0=mm+0=m and 0+m=m0+m=m.

m+S(n)=S(m+n)m+S(n)=S(m+n) and S(m)+n=S(m+n)S(m)+n=S(m+n); in particular S(n)=n+S(0)S(n)=n+S(0).

(k+m)+n=k+(m+n)(k+m)+n=k+(m+n).

m+n=n+mm+n=n+m.

If k+m=k+nk+m=k+n, then m=nm=n.

m<nm<n if and only if k+m<k+nk+m<k+n, and m≤nm\le n if and only if k+m≤k+nk+m\le k+n.

m≤nm\le n if and only if there is j∈ωj\in\omega with m+j=nm+j=n.

If m+n=0m+n=0, then m=0m=0 and n=0n=0.
