Convex Weights, the Standard Simplex, and Convex Combinations in Rn\mathbb{R}^n

Defines convex weights of length N, the standard simplex of all of them, and the convex combination of N points of RnR^n with given weights.

Statement

In the setting of Convex Sets in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let N∈NN\in\mathbb{N}.

Convex weights and the standard simplex. The standard simplex is

ΔN={t∈RN: tk≥0 for every k∈[N], ∑k=1Ntk=1},\Delta_{N}=\Bigl\{t\in\mathbb{R}^{N}:\ t_{k}\ge0\text{ for every }k\in[N],\ \sum_{k=1}^{N}t_{k}=1\Bigr\},

and its points are called convex weights of length NN.

Convex combination. For points x1,…,xNx_{1},\dots,x_{N} of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, that is, a function [N]→Rn[N]\to\mathbb{R}^{n}, k↦xkk\mapsto x_{k}, and for t∈ΔNt\in\Delta_{N}, the convex combination of x1,…,xNx_{1},\dots,x_{N} with weights tt is the point

∑k=1Ntkxk∈Rn,\sum_{k=1}^{N}t_{k}x_{k}\in\mathbb{R}^{n},

the sum of the scalar multiples tkxkt_{k}x_{k}.

Convex combinations of points of a set. For S⊆RnS\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}, a point z∈Rnz\in\mathbb{R}^{n} is a convex combination of NN points of SS if z=∑k=1Ntkxkz=\sum_{k=1}^{N}t_{k}x_{k} for some points x1,…,xNx_{1},\dots,x_{N} of SS and some t∈ΔNt\in\Delta_{N}.
