The Norm Metric of a Real Normed Space

In a real normed space the zero vector has norm 0, d(u,v) = ||u - v|| is a metric, the reverse triangle inequality holds, limits respect sums, differences, scalar multiples and norms, and convergent sequences are Cauchy.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let (V,∥⋅∥)(V,\lVert\cdot\rVert) be a real normed space, with zero vector 0V0_{V}, differences u−vu-v and norm metric dVd_{V}. Sequences are as in Sequences (i). Convergence of a sequence in VV means convergence in the metric space (V,dV)(V,d_{V}), by (ii), and convergence of a sequence in R\mathbb{R} is as in Convergent Sequences of Real Numbers (i). In (iv), (v), (vi) and (vii), let (um)(u_{m}) and (vm)(v_{m}) be sequences in VV converging to u∈Vu\in V and to v∈Vv\in V, and let (λm)(\lambda_{m}) be a sequence in R\mathbb{R} converging to λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R}.

Norm of the zero vector. ∥0V∥=0\lVert0_{V}\rVert=0.

Norm metric. dVd_{V} is a metric on VV.

Reverse triangle inequality. For all u,v∈Vu,v\in V,

∣ ∥u∥−∥v∥ ∣≤∥u−v∥.\bigl|\,\lVert u\rVert-\lVert v\rVert\,\bigr|\le\lVert u-v\rVert .

Limit of a sum. The termwise sum (um+vm)(u_{m}+v_{m}) converges to u+vu+v.

Limit of a difference. The termwise difference (um−vm)(u_{m}-v_{m}) converges to u−vu-v.

Limit of a scalar multiple. The termwise product (λmum)(\lambda_{m}u_{m}) converges to λu\lambda u.

Limit of the norms. The sequence (∥um∥)(\lVert u_{m}\rVert) of termwise norms in R\mathbb{R} converges to ∥u∥\lVert u\rVert.
