Preimages under a Map: Membership, the Preimage Map, Sequences of Preimages, and the Set of Sets with Preimage in a Given Set

Membership in a preimage u−1(V)u^{-1}(V) means lying in S with value in V; V -> u−1(V)u^{-1}(V) is a map from P(T) to P(S), and so k -> u−1(Vk)u^{-1}(V_k) is a sequence for a sequence (Vk)V_k); and the sets B with u−1(B)u^{-1}(B) in a given set form a set.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let SS and TT be sets and let u:S→Tu:S\to T be a map. Let P(S)\mathcal{P}(S) and P(T)\mathcal{P}(T) be the power sets of SS and TT. For every set VV, u−1(V)u^{-1}(V) denotes the preimage u−1[V]u^{-1}[V] of VV under uu of The Image and the Preimage of a Class under a Class (ii); for a subset VV of TT this is the preimage of Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation (vii). Sequences are as in Sequences (i), and predicative is meant for formulas written with abbreviations.

Let zz, VV, ss and ww be distinct set variables, and let uu also denote a variable of either kind, distinct from them, whose value is the map uu. Let π(z,V)\pi(z,V) be the formula

∀s (s∈z⇔∃w (w∈V∧(s,w)∈u)),\forall s\,\bigl(s\in z\Leftrightarrow\exists w\,(w\in V\wedge(s,w)\in u)\bigr),

with (s,w)∈u(s,w)\in u as in Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (iii). Then π\pi is predicative, its free variables are zz, VV and uu, and for all sets VV and zz: u−1(V)u^{-1}(V) is a set and a subset of SS, and π(z,V)\pi(z,V) holds if and only if z=u−1(V)z=u^{-1}(V). Thus u−1(V)u^{-1}(V) is a defined set symbol with the argument VV and the parameter uu, given by π\pi and used properly at every set VV.

For every subset VV of TT and every set ss: s∈u−1(V)s\in u^{-1}(V) if and only if s∈Ss\in S and u(s)∈Vu(s)\in V.

There is exactly one map g:P(T)→P(S)g:\mathcal{P}(T)\to\mathcal{P}(S) with g(V)=u−1(V)g(V)=u^{-1}(V) for every V∈P(T)V\in\mathcal{P}(T).

Let (Vk)(V_{k}) be a sequence in P(T)\mathcal{P}(T). There is exactly one sequence (Wk)(W_{k}) in P(S)\mathcal{P}(S) with Wk=u−1(Vk)W_{k}=u^{-1}(V_{k}) for every k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}.

Let F\mathcal{F} be a set. The class {B∈P(T):u−1(B)∈F}\{B\in\mathcal{P}(T):u^{-1}(B)\in\mathcal{F}\} of those sets BB with B⊆TB\subseteq T and u−1(B)∈Fu^{-1}(B)\in\mathcal{F} is a set and a subset of P(T)\mathcal{P}(T); for every set BB, BB belongs to it if and only if B⊆TB\subseteq T and u−1(B)∈Fu^{-1}(B)\in\mathcal{F}.
