Toolkit for AL2

Routine facts for the linear algebra of phase AL2: negatives in a commutative ring, building and comparing tuples, restricted operations and maps, iterated operations in a sub-carrier, the operations on linear maps as binary operations and maps, inverses of bijections, two classes of lengths of independent families, and one predicative condition.

Statement

In the setting of Linear Algebra: Standing Notation: for classes FF, DD, AA and BB, F∣DF|_{D} is the restriction of FF to DD, A×BA\times B the Cartesian product and F−1F^{-1} the inverse of FF. Iterated operations over an interval, the empty one included, are as in Sums and Products over a Finite Set and over an Interval (iv) and Sums and Products over a Finite Set and over an Interval (ii). In the last clause, a condition on set variables x0x_{0} and x1x_{1} is expressed by a predicative formula as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii), with x0,x1x_{0},x_{1} in place of the variables x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} of Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i) and no displayed variables.

Negatives in a commutative ring. Let rr, with ++, ⋅\cdot, 00 and 11, be a commutative ring, and let x∈rx\in r. Then x+(−x)=0x+(-x)=0, where −x-x is the negative of xx.

Tuples in a smaller set. Let XX and YY be sets with X⊆YX\subseteq Y, and let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}. Then Xn⊆YnX^{n}\subseteq Y^{n}.

Restricted operations on classes. Let aa and bb be classes with b⊆ab\subseteq a, and let ∗:a×a→a\ast:a\times a\to a be a map with u∗v∈bu\ast v\in b for all u,v∈bu,v\in b, where u∗vu\ast v denotes ∗((u,v))\ast((u,v)). Then ∗∣b×b\ast|_{b\times b} is a map b×b→bb\times b\to b, and

(∗∣b×b)((u,v))=u∗v(u,v∈b).(\ast|_{b\times b})((u,v))=u\ast v\qquad(u,v\in b).

Restricting a map on a product. Let AA, BB and CC be classes with C⊆BC\subseteq B, and let F:A×B→BF:A\times B\to B be a map with F((a,c))∈CF((a,c))\in C for all a∈Aa\in A and c∈Cc\in C. Then F∣A×C:A×C→CF|_{A\times C}:A\times C\to C is a map, and

(F∣A×C)((a,c))=F((a,c))(a∈A, c∈C).(F|_{A\times C})((a,c))=F((a,c))\qquad(a\in A,\ c\in C).

Iterated operations in a sub-carrier. Let XX be a set, let ∗\ast be an associative and commutative binary operation on XX with neutral element ee, let Y⊆XY\subseteq X be a set, and let ⋄\diamond be an associative and commutative binary operation on YY with neutral element ee such that x⋄y=x∗yx\diamond y=x\ast y for all x,y∈Yx,y\in Y. Let AA be a finite set and f:A→Yf:A\to Y a map. Then

⋄x∈Af(x)=∗x∈Af(x).\mathop{\diamond}\limits_{x\in A}f(x)=\mathop{\ast}\limits_{x\in A}f(x).

Iterated operations over {1,…,m}\{1,\dots,m\} in a sub-carrier. Let XX, ∗\ast, ee, YY and ⋄\diamond be as in (v), let m∈N0m\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and let x∈Ymx\in Y^{m}. Then

⋄k=1mxk=∗k=1mxk.\mathop{\diamond}\limits_{k=1}^{m}x_{k}=\mathop{\ast}\limits_{k=1}^{m}x_{k}.

Terms of a linear combination in a smaller space. Let KK be a field, and let V′V' and VV be vector spaces over KK with V′⊆VV'\subseteq V such that the scalar multiple λv\lambda v formed in V′V' equals the one formed in VV for all λ∈K\lambda\in K and v∈V′v\in V'. Let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, λ∈Kn\lambda\in K^{n} and v∈V′nv\in V'^{n}. Then the nn-tuple (λ1v1,…,λnvn)(\lambda_{1}v_{1},\dots,\lambda_{n}v_{n}) of the terms of the linear combination of vv with coefficients λ\lambda is the same whether it is formed in V′V' or in VV.

Addition of linear maps as a binary operation. Let KK be a field and let VV and WW be vector spaces over KK. There is a binary operation AA on L(V,W)\mathcal{L}(V,W) with

A((S,T))=S+T(S,T∈L(V,W)).A((S,T))=S+T\qquad(S,T\in\mathcal{L}(V,W)).

Scalar multiplication of linear maps as a map. Let KK be a field and let VV and WW be vector spaces over KK. There is a map M:K×L(V,W)→L(V,W)M:K\times\mathcal{L}(V,W)\to\mathcal{L}(V,W) with

M((λ,T))=λT(λ∈K, T∈L(V,W)).M((\lambda,T))=\lambda T\qquad(\lambda\in K,\ T\in\mathcal{L}(V,W)).

Composition of linear operators as a binary operation. Let KK be a field and let VV be a vector space over KK. There is a binary operation CC on L(V)\mathcal{L}(V) with

C((S,T))=ST(S,T∈L(V)).C((S,T))=ST\qquad(S,T\in\mathcal{L}(V)).

Values of the inverse of a bijection. Let AA and BB be classes and let F:A→BF:A\to B be a bijection. Then F−1:B→AF^{-1}:B\to A is a map,

F(F−1(w))=w(w∈B)andF−1(F(v))=v(v∈A).F(F^{-1}(w))=w\quad(w\in B)\qquad\text{and}\qquad F^{-1}(F(v))=v\quad(v\in A).

Mutual inclusion. Let XX and YY be classes with X⊆YX\subseteq Y and Y⊆XY\subseteq X, where ⊆\subseteq is the subclass relation. Then X=YX=Y.

Values of a bijection. Let AA and BB be classes, let G:A→BG:A\to B be a bijection and let u∈Au\in A. Then G(u)∈BG(u)\in B.

Removing one element. Let AA and ii be classes and let jj be a set. Then i∈A∖{j}i\in A\setminus\{j\} if and only if i∈Ai\in A and i≠ji\neq j.

Tuples combined termwise. Let XX be a set, let ∗\ast be a binary operation on XX, let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and let f,g∈Xnf,g\in X^{n}. Then there is s∈Xns\in X^{n} with sk=fk∗gks_{k}=f_{k}\ast g_{k} for every k∈[n]k\in[n].

Constant tuples. Let XX be a set, let c∈Xc\in X and let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}. Then there is s∈Xns\in X^{n} with sk=cs_{k}=c for every k∈[n]k\in[n].

Tuples with one distinguished component. Let XX be a set, let a,b∈Xa,b\in X, let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and let j∈[n]j\in[n]. Then there is s∈Xns\in X^{n} with sj=as_{j}=a and sk=bs_{k}=b for every k∈[n]k\in[n] with k≠jk\neq j.

Equality of tuples. Let XX be a set, let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and let s,t∈Xns,t\in X^{n} with sk=tks_{k}=t_{k} for every k∈[n]k\in[n]. Then s=ts=t.

Nonempty segments. Let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and let j∈[n]j\in[n]. Then n=m+1n=m+1 for some m∈N0m\in\mathbb{N}_{0}.

The class of lengths of independent extensions. Let KK be a field, let VV be a vector space over KK, let m∈N0m\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and let u∈Vmu\in V^{m}. Then there is a class AA such that, for every class pp, p∈Ap\in A if and only if p∈N0p\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and there are w∈Vpw\in V^{p} and c∈Vm+pc\in V^{m+p} with

ci=ui(i∈[m]),cm+j=wj(j∈[p]),c_{i}=u_{i}\quad(i\in[m]),\qquad c_{m+j}=w_{j}\quad(j\in[p]),

and cc linearly independent.

The class of lengths of independent families in a class. Let KK be a field, let VV be a vector space over KK, and let WW be a subclass of VV. Then there is a class AA such that, for every class qq, q∈Aq\in A if and only if q∈N0q\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and there is c∈Wqc\in W^{q} that is linearly independent.

A common source is predicative. Let AA, FF and GG be class variables, parameters whose fixed values are classes, also denoted AA, FF and GG. Then the condition on x0x_{0} and x1x_{1}

there is a set l∈A with (l,x0)∈F and (l,x1)∈G,\text{there is a set } l\in A \text{ with } (l,x_{0})\in F \text{ and } (l,x_{1})\in G,

with (l,x0)(l,x_{0}) and (l,x1)(l,x_{1}) ordered pairs, is expressed by a predicative formula.
