Monoids of Functions and Matrices, Permutation Groups, and the Matrix Exponential as a One-Parameter Group

The functions from a set to itself form a monoid under composition whose units are the permutations, the symmetric group SnS_n carries the sign homomorphism onto {1,-1}, the real n x n matrices form a monoid whose units form GLn(R)GL_n(R) with the determinant a homomorphism to the nonzero reals, and t -> etAe^{tA} is a one-parameter group in GLn(R)GL_n(R).

Statement

In the settings of Groups: Standing Notation and Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation (Algebra), let XX be a set and let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}.

Functions of a set. The set XXX^{X} of functions from XX to XX, with composition, is a monoid with identity idX\mathrm{id}_{X}.

Units of the function monoid. The units of the monoid XXX^{X} of (i) are exactly the permutations of XX.

The group of permutations of a set. The permutations of XX, with composition, form a group.

Symmetric groups. The set SnS_{n} of permutations of [n][n], with composition, is a group.

The signs. {1,−1}\{1,-1\} is a subgroup of the multiplicative group R∖{0}\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\} of Additive and Multiplicative Groups of Numbers (ii).

The sign homomorphism. The sign sgn⁡:Sn→{1,−1}\operatorname{sgn}:S_{n}\to\{1,-1\} is a homomorphism from the group SnS_{n} of (iv) to {1,−1}\{1,-1\} with multiplication, a subgroup by (v):

sgn⁡(σ∘τ)=sgn⁡(σ)sgn⁡(τ)(σ,τ∈Sn).\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma\circ\tau)=\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)\operatorname{sgn}(\tau)\qquad(\sigma,\tau\in S_{n}).

Square matrices. Mn(R)\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), with the matrix product, is a monoid with identity InI_{n}.

Units of the matrix monoid. The units of the monoid Mn(R)\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) of (vii) are exactly the invertible matrices.

The general linear group. GLn(R)\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), with the matrix product, is a group.

The determinant. det⁡:GLn(R)→R∖{0}\det:\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R})\to\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\} is a homomorphism from the group GLn(R)\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) of (ix) to the multiplicative group R∖{0}\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\} of Additive and Multiplicative Groups of Numbers (ii):

det⁡(AB)=det⁡A det⁡B(A,B∈GLn(R)).\det(AB)=\det A\,\det B\qquad(A,B\in\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R})).

The matrix exponential. For every A∈Mn(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), the function R→GLn(R)\mathbb{R}\to\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), t↦etAt\mapsto e^{tA}, with eMe^{M} the exponential of M∈Mn(R)M\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), is a one-parameter group in the group GLn(R)\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) of (ix).
