A Tight Family of Finite Borel Measures Has an Increasing Sequence of Compact Sets Carrying All but 1/j of Every Mass

For a tight family of finite Borel measures on a metric space there is an increasing sequence of compact sets whose j-th complement has mass less than 1/j under every measure of the family.

Statement

In the setting of Convergence of Probability Measures and Random Elements: Standing Notation, let II be a set and let (μi)i∈I(\mu_{i})_{i\in I} be a tight family of finite Borel measures on SS.

Increasing compact sets carrying almost all of every mass. There is a sequence (Kj)j∈N(K_{j})_{j\in\mathbb{N}} of subsets of SS, each compact in (S,Td)(S,\mathcal{T}_{d}), such that Kj⊆Kj+1K_{j}\subseteq K_{j+1} for every j∈Nj\in\mathbb{N} and

μi(S∖Kj)<1jfor all i∈I and j∈N.\mu_{i}(S\setminus K_{j})<\frac{1}{j}\qquad\text{for all }i\in I\text{ and }j\in\mathbb{N}.
