Finite Sums of Cᵏ Functions Are of Class Cᵏ

A finite sum of functions of class Cᵏ on an open subset of ℝⁿ is of class Cᵏ, and a finite sum of smooth functions is smooth.

Statement

In the setting of Functions of Class Cᵏ: Notation, let k∈N0k\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and N∈NN\in\mathbb{N}, and let f1,…,fN:U→Rf_{1},\dots,f_{N}:U\to\mathbb{R}.

Functions of class CkC^{k}. If fif_{i} is of class CkC^{k} on UU for every i∈[N]i\in[N], then the function U→RU\to\mathbb{R}, x↦∑i=1Nfi(x)x\mapsto\sum_{i=1}^{N}f_{i}(x), whose value at xx is the finite sum of the real numbers f1(x),…,fN(x)f_{1}(x),\dots,f_{N}(x), is of class CkC^{k} on UU.

Smooth functions. If fif_{i} is smooth on UU for every i∈[N]i\in[N], then the function U→RU\to\mathbb{R}, x↦∑i=1Nfi(x)x\mapsto\sum_{i=1}^{N}f_{i}(x), is smooth on UU.
