Open Boxes: Emptiness, Intersections and Preimages under Concatenation

An open box with a side of nonpositive length is empty, the intersection of two open boxes is the open box with the componentwise larger lower and smaller upper corners, and the preimage of an open box in ℝ^{m+n} under concatenation is the product of the corresponding boxes in ℝ^m and ℝ^n.

Statement

In the setting of Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation, for n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} and a,b∈Rna,b\in\mathbb{R}^{n} let R(a,b)R(a,b) be the open box with corners aa and bb. For s,t∈Rs,t\in\mathbb{R}, max⁡{s,t}\max\{s,t\} and min⁡{s,t}\min\{s,t\} are as in The Maximum and Minimum of Two Elements of a Total Order (i); for a function u:S→Tu:S\to T and V⊆TV\subseteq T, u−1(V)u^{-1}(V) is the preimage of VV, as in Preimages under a Map: Membership, the Preimage Map, Sequences of Preimages, and the Set of Sets with Preimage in a Given Set.

Empty boxes. Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} and a,b∈Rna,b\in\mathbb{R}^{n}. If bi≤aib_{i}\le a_{i} for some i∈[n]i\in[n], then R(a,b)=∅R(a,b)=\emptyset.

Intersections. Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} and a,b,a′,b′∈Rna,b,a',b'\in\mathbb{R}^{n}. There are c,d∈Rnc,d\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with ci=max⁡{ai,ai′}c_{i}=\max\{a_{i},a'_{i}\} and di=min⁡{bi,bi′}d_{i}=\min\{b_{i},b'_{i}\} for every i∈[n]i\in[n], and

R(a,b)∩R(a′,b′)=R(c,d).R(a,b)\cap R(a',b')=R(c,d).

Preimages under concatenation. Let m,n∈Nm,n\in\mathbb{N}, let ι:Rm×Rn→Rm+n\iota:\mathbb{R}^{m}\times\mathbb{R}^{n}\to\mathbb{R}^{m+n} be the concatenation function of Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation (viii), let a,b∈Rm+na,b\in\mathbb{R}^{m+n}, and let a′,b′∈Rma',b'\in\mathbb{R}^{m} and a′′,b′′∈Rna'',b''\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with ι(a′,a′′)=a\iota(a',a'')=a and ι(b′,b′′)=b\iota(b',b'')=b. Then

ι−1(R(a,b))=R(a′,b′)×R(a′′,b′′).\iota^{-1}\bigl(R(a,b)\bigr)=R(a',b')\times R(a'',b'').
