The Doob–Dynkin Factorization

Under dependent choice, a random variable measurable with respect to the σ-algebra generated by a random element Z of a metric space S is a Borel function of Z; consequently the conditional expectation of an integrable random variable or vector given Z has a version of the form h(Z) with h Borel on S.

Statement

In the setting of Conditional Expectations: Notation, let (S,d)(S,d) be a metric space, let ZZ be a random element of SS, and let σ(Z)\sigma(Z) be the σ\sigma-algebra generated by ZZ.

Factorization. Assume the axiom of dependent choice. Let Y:Ω→RY:\Omega\to\mathbb{R} be σ(Z)\sigma(Z)-measurable. Then there is a Borel function h:S→Rh:S\to\mathbb{R} with

Y=h(Z).Y=h(Z).

Conditional expectations given σ(Z)\sigma(Z). Assume the axiom of dependent choice, and let X∈L1(P)X\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(P). Then there is a Borel function h:S→Rh:S\to\mathbb{R} with h(Z)h(Z) in the conditional expectation E[X∣σ(Z)]\mathbb{E}[X\mid\sigma(Z)].

Conditional expectations of random vectors given σ(Z)\sigma(Z). Assume the axiom of dependent choice, and let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} and X∈L1(P;Rn)X\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(P;\mathbb{R}^{n}). Then there is a Borel function h:S→Rnh:S\to\mathbb{R}^{n} with h(Z)h(Z) in the conditional expectation E[X∣σ(Z)]\mathbb{E}[X\mid\sigma(Z)].
