The Classes Cᵏ(U) Exist and Are Unique

There is exactly one sequence of sets of real-valued functions on U, indexed by k in ℕ₀, starting with the continuous functions and passing from k to k+1 by requiring that all first partial derivatives exist on U and lie in the k-th set.

Statement

In the setting of Higher Derivatives on Open Subsets of ℝⁿ: Notation, let RU\mathbb{R}^{U} be the set of functions U→RU\to\mathbb{R} (a set by The Elements of the Class of Functions from a Set to a Set, and This Class Is a Set (ii)) and P(RU)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}^{U}) its power set.

Existence and uniqueness. There is exactly one function k↦Ck(U)k\mapsto\mathcal{C}^{k}(U) from N0\mathbb{N}_{0} to P(RU)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}^{U}) such that

C0(U)={h∈RU: h is continuous on U}\mathcal{C}^{0}(U)=\{h\in\mathbb{R}^{U}:\ h\text{ is continuous on }U\}

and, for every k∈N0k\in\mathbb{N}_{0},

Ck+1(U)={h∈RU: for every i∈[n], ∂ih(x) exists for every x∈U and ∂ih∈Ck(U)},\mathcal{C}^{k+1}(U)=\bigl\{h\in\mathbb{R}^{U}:\ \text{for every }i\in[n],\ \partial_{i}h(x)\text{ exists for every }x\in U\text{ and }\partial_{i}h\in\mathcal{C}^{k}(U)\bigr\},

where continuity on UU is that of Continuous Map Between Metric Spaces (ii).
