Linear Functionals Respect Differences, and Coefficients Along a Nonzero Vector Are Unique

A linear functional on a subspace maps differences to differences, and the scalar multiplying a nonzero vector is determined by the product.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity and Real Normed, Inner Product and Hilbert Spaces: Notation, let VV be a real vector space.

Differences and functionals. Let WW be a linear subspace of VV, let gg be a linear functional on WW, and let u,v∈Wu,v\in W. Then u−v∈Wu-v\in W and

g(u−v)=g(u)−g(v).g(u-v)=g(u)-g(v).

Coefficients along a nonzero vector. Let x0∈Vx_{0}\in V with x0≠0Vx_{0}\neq0_{V}, and let t,t′∈Rt,t'\in\mathbb{R}. If tx0=t′x0tx_{0}=t'x_{0}, then t=t′t=t'.
