Closure Facts in an Ordered Field: Negatives, Differences, Quotients, Absolute Values, Powers, Natural Numbers, Halves and Minima

Negatives, differences, reciprocals, quotients, absolute values, powers, images of natural numbers, halves and the minimum of two positive elements of an ordered field all lie in the field, with the basic facts about halves and minima.

Statement

In the setting of Commutative Rings, Fields and Ordered Fields: Standard Notation, let FF, with ++, ⋅\cdot, 00, 11 and a total order ≤\le, be an ordered field, and let x,y∈Fx,y\in F.

The negative −x-x and the difference x−y=x+(−y)x-y=x+(-y) lie in FF.

If y≠0y\neq0, then the reciprocal y−1y^{-1} and the quotient x/y=x⋅y−1x/y=x\cdot y^{-1} lie in FF.

The absolute value ∣x∣|x| lies in FF.

For every n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, the power xnx^{n} lies in FF, with x0x^{0} as in Powers with Exponents in the Natural Numbers with Zero §zero.

For every n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, the image nFn_{F} of nn in FF lies in FF.

The element 2=2F2=2_{F}, read as in Commutative Rings, Fields and Ordered Fields: Standard Notation §numerals, lies in FF and satisfies 2=1+12=1+1 and 2≠02\neq0 in FF.

With 22 as in the clause two, x/2∈Fx/2\in F and x/2+x/2=xx/2+x/2=x in FF.

Let a,b∈Fa,b\in F with 0<a0<a and 0<b0<b, and let min⁡{a,b}\min\{a,b\} be as in The Maximum and Minimum of Two Elements of a Total Order §exists. Then min⁡{a,b}∈F\min\{a,b\}\in F, 0<min⁡{a,b}0<\min\{a,b\}, min⁡{a,b}≤a\min\{a,b\}\le a and min⁡{a,b}≤b\min\{a,b\}\le b; in particular, there is c∈Fc\in F with 0<c0<c, c≤ac\le a and c≤bc\le b.
