Measurable Maps: Generators, Composition, Continuous Maps, Restrictions, and Criteria for Real- and [0,∞]-Valued Maps

Measurability can be tested on a generating family; composites, constant maps, identities, continuous maps between metric spaces and restrictions to measurable sets are measurable; and real- and [0,∞]-valued maps are measurable exactly when their superlevel sets are measurable.

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}), (Y,G)(Y,\mathcal{G}) and (Z,H)(Z,\mathcal{H}) be measurable spaces. Maps that are F/G\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G}-measurable are as in Measurable Map, and the Set of Measurable Maps (i), and maps from XX that are measurable as maps into R\mathbb{R} or into [0,∞][0,\infty] are as in Measurable Map, and the Set of Measurable Maps (iii) and Measurable Map, and the Set of Measurable Maps (vi), with B([0,∞])\mathcal{B}([0,\infty]) the Borel σ\sigma-algebra of [0,∞][0,\infty]. On [0,∞][0,\infty] the relations << and >> are those of The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (iii).

Let C\mathcal{C} be a subset of the power set P(Y)\mathcal{P}(Y) with G=σ(C)\mathcal{G}=\sigma(\mathcal{C}). A map f:X→Yf:X\to Y is F/G\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G}-measurable if and only if f−1(C)∈Ff^{-1}(C)\in\mathcal{F} for every C∈CC\in\mathcal{C}.

If f:X→Yf:X\to Y is F/G\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G}-measurable and g:Y→Zg:Y\to Z is G/H\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{H}-measurable, then g∘f:X→Zg\circ f:X\to Z is F/H\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{H}-measurable.

For every y0∈Yy_{0}\in Y, the map X→YX\to Y with value y0y_{0} at every point is F/G\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G}-measurable, and the identity idX\mathrm{id}_{X} is F/F\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{F}-measurable.

Let (M,d)(M,d) and (N,e)(N,e) be metric spaces with Borel σ\sigma-algebras B(M,d)\mathcal{B}(M,d) and B(N,e)\mathcal{B}(N,e); by Borel Sigma-Algebra of a Metric Space (i) these are the σ\sigma-algebras generated by the open subsets of MM and of NN, so they are σ\sigma-algebras on MM and on NN, and (M,B(M,d))(M,\mathcal{B}(M,d)) and (N,B(N,e))(N,\mathcal{B}(N,e)) are measurable spaces, by Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (iii). Let h:M→Nh:M\to N be continuous. Then hh is B(M,d)/B(N,e)\mathcal{B}(M,d)/\mathcal{B}(N,e)-measurable.

For a map f:X→Rf:X\to\mathbb{R} the following are equivalent: (a) ff is measurable as a map into R\mathbb{R}; (b) {x∈X:f(x)>a}∈F\{x\in X:f(x)>a\}\in\mathcal{F} for every a∈Ra\in\mathbb{R}; (c) {x∈X:f(x)≥a}∈F\{x\in X:f(x)\ge a\}\in\mathcal{F} for every a∈Ra\in\mathbb{R}; (d) {x∈X:f(x)<a}∈F\{x\in X:f(x)<a\}\in\mathcal{F} for every a∈Ra\in\mathbb{R}; (e) {x∈X:f(x)≤a}∈F\{x\in X:f(x)\le a\}\in\mathcal{F} for every a∈Ra\in\mathbb{R}.

A map f:X→[0,∞]f:X\to[0,\infty] is measurable as a map into [0,∞][0,\infty] if and only if {x∈X:f(x)>a}∈F\{x\in X:f(x)>a\}\in\mathcal{F} for every a∈Ra\in\mathbb{R}.

Let f:X→Rf:X\to\mathbb{R} satisfy f(x)≥0f(x)\ge0 for every x∈Xx\in X; then f(x)∈[0,∞]f(x)\in[0,\infty] for every x∈Xx\in X by The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii), so ff is also a map into [0,∞][0,\infty]. Then ff is measurable as a map into R\mathbb{R} (F/B(R)\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})-measurable) if and only if ff is measurable as a map into [0,∞][0,\infty] (F/B([0,∞])\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{B}([0,\infty])-measurable).

Let A∈FA\in\mathcal{F} and let FA={B∈F:B⊆A}\mathcal{F}_{A}=\{B\in\mathcal{F}:B\subseteq A\}, a σ\sigma-algebra on AA by Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (xi). If f:X→Yf:X\to Y is F/G\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G}-measurable, then the restriction f∣A:A→Yf|_{A}:A\to Y is FA/G\mathcal{F}_{A}/\mathcal{G}-measurable.
