Estimates for the Complex Exponential and Its Continuity

For complex h, |exp h - 1| is at most |h| e^|h| and |exp h - 1 - h| at most |h|^2 e^|h|; hence the complex exponential is continuous, and its difference quotient at z differs from exp z by at most |exp z| |h| e^|h|.

Statement

In the setting of Complex Analysis: Standing Notation, let exp⁡:C→C\exp:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C} be the complex exponential function, and let z∈Cz\in\mathbb{C}.

Remainder bounds. For every h∈Ch\in\mathbb{C},

∣exp⁡h−1∣≤∣h∣ exp⁡R(∣h∣),∣exp⁡h−1−h∣≤∣h∣2 exp⁡R(∣h∣).|\exp h-1|\le|h|\,\exp_{\mathbb{R}}(|h|),\qquad |\exp h-1-h|\le|h|^{2}\,\exp_{\mathbb{R}}(|h|).

Continuity. exp⁡\exp is a continuous function from the metric space (C,dC)(\mathbb{C},d_{\mathbb{C}}) to itself.

Difference quotients. For every h∈Ch\in\mathbb{C} with h≠0h\neq0,

∣exp⁡(z+h)−exp⁡zh−exp⁡z∣≤∣exp⁡z∣ ∣h∣ exp⁡R(∣h∣).\left|\frac{\exp(z+h)-\exp z}{h}-\exp z\right|\le|\exp z|\,|h|\,\exp_{\mathbb{R}}(|h|).
