Real Matrices and Linear Maps between Euclidean Spaces

Multiplication by a real m x n matrix is a linear map from RnR^n to RmR^m, every such linear map arises from exactly one matrix (whose columns are the images of the standard basis vectors), matrix products correspond to composites, and a square matrix is invertible exactly when its map is bijective, exactly when its kernel is zero.

Statement

In the setting of Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation (Algebra) and Linear Algebra: Standing Notation, let m,n,p∈Nm,n,p\in\mathbb{N}, with Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, Rm\mathbb{R}^{m} and Rp\mathbb{R}^{p} the real vector spaces of tuples.

Linearity. For every A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}), LAL_{A} is a linear map from Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} to Rm\mathbb{R}^{m}.

Kernel and image. For every A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}), ker⁡LA\ker L_{A} is a linear subspace of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, and im⁡LA\operatorname{im}L_{A} is a finite-dimensional linear subspace of Rm\mathbb{R}^{m}.

Representation. For every linear map TT from Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} to Rm\mathbb{R}^{m} there is exactly one A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}) with T=LAT=L_{A}; its jj-th column is TejTe_{j}, that is,

Aij=(Tej)i(i∈[m], j∈[n]).A_{ij}=(Te_{j})_{i}\qquad(i\in[m],\ j\in[n]).

Products. For A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}) and B∈Mn×p(R)B\in\mathcal{M}_{n\times p}(\mathbb{R}), LABL_{AB} is the composite of LBL_{B} followed by LAL_{A}:

LAB=LALB.L_{AB}=L_{A}L_{B}.

Invertibility. For a square matrix A∈Mn(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) the following are equivalent: AA is invertible; LAL_{A} is bijective; ker⁡LA={0}\ker L_{A}=\{0\}.
