A Nonzero Positive Semidefinite Matrix Factors as BBᵀ with BᵀB Invertible

Every nonzero symmetric positive semidefinite d x d matrix Sigma equals B BTB^T for some d x r matrix B with r at most d whose Gram matrix BTB^T B is invertible.

Statement

In the setting of Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation, let d∈Nd\in\mathbb{N} and let Σ∈S(d)\Sigma\in\mathcal{S}(d) be positive semidefinite with Σ≠0d\Sigma\neq0_{d}.

There are r∈[d]r\in[d] and B∈Rd×rB\in\mathbb{R}^{d\times r} such that B⊤BB^{\top}B is invertible and

BB⊤=Σ.BB^{\top}=\Sigma.
