Unions and Intersections over a Countable Index Set in a σ-Algebra

A σ-algebra contains the union, and for a nonempty index set the intersection, of any family of its members indexed by a countable set.

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let F\mathcal{F} be a σ\sigma-algebra on a set XX, let II be a countable set, and let A:I→FA:I\to\mathcal{F}, i↦Aii\mapsto A_{i}, be a map. Unions and intersections of the family (Ai)i∈I(A_{i})_{i\in I} are as in Indexed Families of Sets and Their Union, Intersection and Product (ii) and Indexed Families of Sets and Their Union, Intersection and Product (iii).

⋃i∈IAi∈F\bigcup_{i\in I}A_{i}\in\mathcal{F}.

If I≠∅I\neq\emptyset, then ⋂i∈IAi∈F\bigcap_{i\in I}A_{i}\in\mathcal{F}.
