Periodicity of the Complex Exponential and Its Kernel

The complex exponential takes the values i, -1 and 1 at πi/2, πi and 2πi, is periodic with period 2πi, and equals 1 exactly at the integer multiples of 2πi.

Statement

In the setting of Complex Analysis: Standing Notation, let exp⁡:C→C\exp:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C} be the complex exponential function, and let π\pi be the real number of The Number Pi (i).

Special values.

exp⁡(π2i)=i,exp⁡(πi)=−1,exp⁡(2πi)=1.\exp\bigl(\tfrac{\pi}{2}i\bigr)=i,\qquad \exp(\pi i)=-1,\qquad \exp(2\pi i)=1 .

The period. For every z∈Cz\in\mathbb{C},

exp⁡(z+2πi)=exp⁡z.\exp(z+2\pi i)=\exp z .

The kernel. For z∈Cz\in\mathbb{C}, exp⁡z=1\exp z=1 if and only if z=2πkiz=2\pi k i for some k∈Zk\in\mathbb{Z}.
