The Norm of a Real Inner Product Space

An inner product is linear in its second argument as well; the induced norm expands squares of sums and differences, is a norm, satisfies the parallelogram law, and the inner product is continuous for the norm metric.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let VV be a real inner product space with inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle, induced norm ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\|, zero vector 0V0_V and differences u−vu-v. Let u,v,w∈Vu,v,w\in V and λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R}.

Bilinearity and the zero vector.

⟨u,v+w⟩=⟨u,v⟩+⟨u,w⟩,⟨u,λv⟩=λ ⟨u,v⟩,⟨0V,v⟩=⟨v,0V⟩=0.\langle u,v+w\rangle=\langle u,v\rangle+\langle u,w\rangle,\qquad \langle u,\lambda v\rangle=\lambda\,\langle u,v\rangle,\qquad \langle 0_V,v\rangle=\langle v,0_V\rangle=0.

Expansion of squares.

∥u+v∥2=∥u∥2+2 ⟨u,v⟩+∥v∥2,∥u−v∥2=∥u∥2−2 ⟨u,v⟩+∥v∥2.\|u+v\|^{2}=\|u\|^{2}+2\,\langle u,v\rangle+\|v\|^{2},\qquad \|u-v\|^{2}=\|u\|^{2}-2\,\langle u,v\rangle+\|v\|^{2}.

Normed space. ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| is a norm on VV, so VV with ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| is a real normed space.

Parallelogram law.

∥u+v∥2+∥u−v∥2=2 ∥u∥2+2 ∥v∥2.\|u+v\|^{2}+\|u-v\|^{2}=2\,\|u\|^{2}+2\,\|v\|^{2}.

Continuity of the inner product. Let dVd_V be the norm metric of the real normed space of (iii), a metric on VV by The Norm Metric of a Real Normed Space (ii). If (um)(u_m) and (vm)(v_m) are sequences in VV that converge to uu and vv in (V,dV)(V,d_V), then ⟨um,vm⟩→⟨u,v⟩\langle u_m,v_m\rangle\to\langle u,v\rangle in R\mathbb{R}, in the sense of Convergent Sequences of Real Numbers (i).
