Limits of Matrix Operations, and the Closed Complete Sets of Symmetric and of Positive Semidefinite Matrices

In the operator-norm distance, sums, scalar multiples, products, matrix-vector products and transposes of convergent sequences of real matrices converge to the corresponding operation on the limits. The symmetric matrices and the positive semidefinite matrices form closed subsets of the square matrices, and each is a complete metric space with the restricted distance.

Let (A(k))(A^{(k)}) and (B(k))(B^{(k)}) be sequences in Mm×n(R)\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}) converging to AA and BB in (Mm×n(R),dm×n)(\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}),d_{m\times n}), (C(k))(C^{(k)}) a sequence in Mn×p(R)\mathcal{M}_{n\times p}(\mathbb{R}) converging to CC in (Mn×p(R),dn×p)(\mathcal{M}_{n\times p}(\mathbb{R}),d_{n\times p}), (tk)(t_{k}) a sequence in R\mathbb{R} converging to tt in (R,dR)(\mathbb{R},d_{\mathbb{R}}), and (xk)(x_{k}) a sequence in Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} converging to xx in (Rn,dE)(\mathbb{R}^{n},d_{E}). Then the following hold.

(A(k)+B(k))(A^{(k)}+B^{(k)}) converges to A+BA+B in (Mm×n(R),dm×n)(\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}),d_{m\times n}).

(tkA(k))(t_{k}A^{(k)}) converges to tAtA in (Mm×n(R),dm×n)(\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}),d_{m\times n}).

(A(k)C(k))(A^{(k)}C^{(k)}) converges to ACAC in (Mm×p(R),dm×p)(\mathcal{M}_{m\times p}(\mathbb{R}),d_{m\times p}).

(A(k)xk)(A^{(k)}x_{k}) converges to AxAx in (Rm,dE)(\mathbb{R}^{m},d_{E}).

((A(k))⊤)((A^{(k)})^{\top}) converges to A⊤A^{\top} in (Mn×m(R),dn×m)(\mathcal{M}_{n\times m}(\mathbb{R}),d_{n\times m}).

S(n)\mathcal{S}(n) is closed in the topological space (Mn(R),Tdn)(\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}),\mathcal{T}_{d_{n}}).

S+(n)\mathcal{S}_{+}(n) is closed in (Mn(R),Tdn)(\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}),\mathcal{T}_{d_{n}}).

Let dS(n)d_{\mathcal{S}(n)} be the restriction of dnd_{n} to S(n)×S(n)\mathcal{S}(n)\times\mathcal{S}(n). Then (S(n),dS(n))(\mathcal{S}(n),d_{\mathcal{S}(n)}) is a complete metric space.

Let dS+(n)d_{\mathcal{S}_{+}(n)} be the restriction of dnd_{n} to S+(n)×S+(n)\mathcal{S}_{+}(n)\times\mathcal{S}_{+}(n). Then (S+(n),dS+(n))(\mathcal{S}_{+}(n),d_{\mathcal{S}_{+}(n)}) is a complete metric space.
