The Complex Plane as R2\mathbb{R}^2: the Map (x,y)↦x+iy(x,y)\mapsto x+iy Is a Real-Linear Isometric Bijection

The map sending a pair (x, y) of real numbers to x + iy is a real-linear bijection of the Euclidean plane onto the complex numbers that preserves distances, so it matches open sets of the two spaces.

Statement

In the setting of Complex Analysis: Standing Notation and of Multivariable Calculus: Notation, with n=2n=2, let Φ:R2→C\Phi:\mathbb{R}^{2}\to\mathbb{C} be the function Φ(x,y)=x+iy\Phi(x,y)=x+iy (Values, Restriction and Equality of a Map, and the Map u↦t(u)u\mapsto t(u) as a Defined Set Symbol (v)).

Bijection. Φ\Phi is a bijection of R2\mathbb{R}^{2} onto C\mathbb{C}, with inverse

Φ−1(z)=(Re⁡z,Im⁡z)(z∈C).\Phi^{-1}(z)=(\operatorname{Re}z,\operatorname{Im}z)\qquad(z\in\mathbb{C}).

Real linearity. For all p,q∈R2p,q\in\mathbb{R}^{2} and t∈Rt\in\mathbb{R}, Φ(p+q)=Φ(p)+Φ(q)\Phi(p+q)=\Phi(p)+\Phi(q) and Φ(tp)=t Φ(p)\Phi(tp)=t\,\Phi(p).

Isometry. For all p,q∈R2p,q\in\mathbb{R}^{2},

∣Φ(p)−Φ(q)∣=∥p−q∥=dE(p,q).|\Phi(p)-\Phi(q)|=\lVert p-q\rVert=d_{E}(p,q).

Open sets. A set W⊆CW\subseteq\mathbb{C} is open in (C,dC)(\mathbb{C},d_{\mathbb{C}}) if and only if {p∈R2:Φ(p)∈W}\{p\in\mathbb{R}^{2}:\Phi(p)\in W\} is open in (R2,dE)(\mathbb{R}^{2},d_{E}), the openness of Multivariable Calculus: Notation (ii).
