Quotient Groups

Names the group of left cosets of a normal subgroup, with the product of cosets, as the quotient group, and the function sending each element to its coset as the canonical projection.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity, let (G,⋅)(G,\cdot) be a group and NN a normal subgroup of GG; let gNgN be the left coset of NN determined by g∈Gg\in G, and G/NG/N the set of left cosets of NN.

Quotient group. The quotient group of GG by NN is the pair (G/N,∗)(G/N,\ast), where ∗\ast is the unique binary operation on G/NG/N with

(gN)∗(hN)=(g⋅h)Nfor all g,h∈G,(gN)\ast(hN)=(g\cdot h)N\qquad\text{for all } g,h\in G,

given by The Product of Cosets of a Normal Subgroup Is Well Defined and Makes the Cosets a Group (i).

Canonical projection. The canonical projection of GG onto G/NG/N is the function π:G→G/N\pi:G\to G/N given by π(g)=gN\pi(g)=gN.
