Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line

Lebesgue measure on the real line is the restriction of Lebesgue outer measure to the Borel sets. That it is a measure is a separate theorem, which assumes the axiom of dependent choice.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let P(R)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}) be the power set of R\mathbb{R}, let [0,∞][0,\infty] be as in The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii), and let λ∗:P(R)→[0,∞]\lambda^{*}:\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R})\to[0,\infty] be the Lebesgue outer measure on R\mathbb{R}. Let B(R)\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}) be the Borel σ\sigma-algebra of R\mathbb{R}. It is a σ\sigma-algebra on R\mathbb{R} by Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (iii), hence a subset of P(R)\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}) by σ-Algebra and Measurable Space (i).

Lebesgue measure on R\mathbb{R} is the restriction

λ=λ∗∣B(R)\lambda=\lambda^{*}|_{\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})}

of λ∗\lambda^{*} to B(R)\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}). By Domains and Restrictions of Maps (ii) and Domains and Restrictions of Maps (iii), λ\lambda is a map λ:B(R)→[0,∞]\lambda:\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})\to[0,\infty] with λ(B)=λ∗(B)\lambda(B)=\lambda^{*}(B) for every B∈B(R)B\in\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}).
