Sections of Subsets and Functions on a Product

For a subset E of X×Y, the section at x is the set of y with (x,y) in E and the section at y the set of x with (x,y) in E; for a function f on X×Y, its sections are the functions y↦f(x,y) and x↦f(x,y).

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let XX and YY be sets and let X×YX\times Y be their Cartesian product.

Sections of sets. Let E⊆X×YE\subseteq X\times Y. For x∈Xx\in X, the section of EE at xx is the subset ExE_{x} of YY, and for y∈Yy\in Y, the section of EE at yy is the subset EyE^{y} of XX, given by

Ex={y′∈Y:(x,y′)∈E},Ey={x′∈X:(x′,y)∈E}.E_{x}=\{y'\in Y:(x,y')\in E\},\qquad E^{y}=\{x'\in X:(x',y)\in E\}.

Sections of functions. Let ZZ be a set and f:X×Y→Zf:X\times Y\to Z a function. For x∈Xx\in X, the section of ff at xx is the function fx:Y→Zf_{x}:Y\to Z, and for y∈Yy\in Y, the section of ff at yy is the function fy:X→Zf^{y}:X\to Z, given by

fx(y′)=f(x,y′)(y′∈Y),fy(x′)=f(x′,y)(x′∈X)f_{x}(y')=f(x,y')\quad(y'\in Y),\qquad f^{y}(x')=f(x',y)\quad(x'\in X)

(these functions exist and are unique by Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation (v)).
