Bounds, Monotonicity and Borwein-Preiss Perturbed Maximisers of the Cross-Level Doubled Function in the Coarse Noise Wasserstein Distance for Compatible Noise-Closed Penalty Pairs

For compatible noise-closed penalty pairs at a fine and a coarse level and upper semicontinuous functions dominated by minus delta times the penalties, the doubled function U(mu)+V(nu)-(alpha/2)W(p_#mu,nu)2nu)^2 has a finite supremum, controlled by its diagonal, monotone in the doubling strength and in penalty-weighted changes of U and V, and it has Borwein-Preiss perturbed strict maximisers localised in a penalty sublevel set independent of alpha and tau.

Statement

In the setting of The Real Numbers: Standing Notation and Background and Two Noise Levels over Hilbert Spaces: a Fine and a Coarse Reading of the Noise Framework and Level-Indexed Notation, let levels 1 and 2 be as in Two Noise Levels over Hilbert Spaces: a Fine and a Coarse Reading of the Noise Framework and Level-Indexed Notation §levels, with the level-indexed notation of Two Noise Levels over Hilbert Spaces: a Fine and a Coarse Reading of the Noise Framework and Level-Indexed Notation §notation, and let (κ,p,j)(\kappa,p,j) be a mode-restriction link from level 1 to level 2, with mode restriction pp and mode embedding jj. For i∈{1,2}i\in\{1,2\} let Pi=(Di,DΣ,i,Ei,Σi)\mathcal{P}_{i}=(\mathcal{D}_{i},\mathcal{D}_{\Sigma,i},\mathcal{E}_{i},\Sigma_{i}) be a noise-closed noise penalty pair on Pρia\mathcal{P}^{a}_{\rho_{i}} at level ii, and suppose that P1\mathcal{P}_{1} and P2\mathcal{P}_{2} are compatible. For i∈{1,2}i\in\{1,2\} let ei∈Re_{i}\in\mathbb{R} be any number with ei≤Ei(σ)e_{i}\le\mathcal{E}_{i}(\sigma) for every σ∈Di\sigma\in\mathcal{D}_{i}; such a number exists by Basic Properties of a Noise-Closed Noise Penalty Pair: Lower Bound, Lower Semicontinuity, Complete Sublevel Sets and Bounded Distances §bounded-below taken at level ii. The reference measure ρi\rho_{i} belongs to Pρia\mathcal{P}^{a}_{\rho_{i}} by The Noise Wasserstein Distance is a Metric on the Measures Noise-Connected to the Reference Measure: Existence of Noise-Optimal Couplings, Comparison with the Quadratic Wasserstein Distance and Lower Semicontinuity §reference, and Wa,iW_{a,i} is a metric on Pρia\mathcal{P}^{a}_{\rho_{i}} by The Noise Wasserstein Distance is a Metric on the Measures Noise-Connected to the Reference Measure: Existence of Noise-Optimal Couplings, Comparison with the Quadratic Wasserstein Distance and Lower Semicontinuity §metric, both taken at level ii; for μ∈D1\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{1} one has p#μ∈D2⊆Pρ2ap_{\#}\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{2}\subseteq\mathcal{P}^{a}_{\rho_{2}} by Compatible Noise Penalty Pairs at a Fine and a Coarse Level §compatible and Noise Penalty Pairs on the Noise Wasserstein Space: the Penalty, Its Score, and Their Domains §pair, so that Wa,2(p#μ,ν)W_{a,2}(p_{\#}\mu,\nu) is a nonnegative real number for every ν∈Pρ2a\nu\in\mathcal{P}^{a}_{\rho_{2}}. Upper semicontinuity of a real function on Di\mathcal{D}_{i} is understood relative to Di\mathcal{D}_{i} in the metric space (Pρia,Wa,i)(\mathcal{P}^{a}_{\rho_{i}},W_{a,i}), and convergent series of real numbers are those of that definition. Let δ∈R\delta\in\mathbb{R} be positive, let b1,b2∈Rb_{1},b_{2}\in\mathbb{R}, and let U:D1→RU:\mathcal{D}_{1}\to\mathbb{R} and V:D2→RV:\mathcal{D}_{2}\to\mathbb{R} be upper semicontinuous functions with

U(μ)≤b1−δ E1(μ)(μ∈D1),V(ν)≤b2−δ E2(ν)(ν∈D2).U(\mu)\le b_{1}-\delta\,\mathcal{E}_{1}(\mu)\quad(\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{1}),\qquad V(\nu)\le b_{2}-\delta\,\mathcal{E}_{2}(\nu)\quad(\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{2}).

For positive α∈R\alpha\in\mathbb{R} let Ψα:D1×D2→R\Psi_{\alpha}:\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2}\to\mathbb{R} have the value

Ψα(μ,ν)=U(μ)+V(ν)−α2 Wa,2(p#μ,ν)2\Psi_{\alpha}(\mu,\nu)=U(\mu)+V(\nu)-\tfrac{\alpha}{2}\,W_{a,2}(p_{\#}\mu,\nu)^{2}

at (μ,ν)(\mu,\nu); the set D1×D2\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2} is nonempty because Di\mathcal{D}_{i} contains DΣ,i\mathcal{D}_{\Sigma,i} (Noise Penalty Pairs on the Noise Wasserstein Space: the Penalty, Its Score, and Their Domains §pair), which is nonempty by Noise Penalty Pairs on the Noise Wasserstein Space: the Penalty, Its Score, and Their Domains §nonempty. Then the following hold.

1. (Bounds) For every positive α∈R\alpha\in\mathbb{R} and every (μ,ν)∈D1×D2(\mu,\nu)\in\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2},

Ψα(μ,ν)≤b1+b2−δ(E1(μ)+E2(ν))≤b1+b2−δ(e1+e2);\Psi_{\alpha}(\mu,\nu)\le b_{1}+b_{2}-\delta\bigl(\mathcal{E}_{1}(\mu)+\mathcal{E}_{2}(\nu)\bigr)\le b_{1}+b_{2}-\delta(e_{1}+e_{2});

so the nonempty set of values of Ψα\Psi_{\alpha} is bounded above, and its supremum, written M(α)M(\alpha) in this and the remaining clauses, is a real number.

2. (Diagonal) For every positive α∈R\alpha\in\mathbb{R} and every μ∈D1\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{1} one has (μ,p#μ)∈D1×D2(\mu,p_{\#}\mu)\in\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2} and U(μ)+V(p#μ)≤M(α)U(\mu)+V(p_{\#}\mu)\le M(\alpha).

3. (Penalty-weighted increase of the data) Let s∈Rs\in\mathbb{R}, and let U′:D1→RU':\mathcal{D}_{1}\to\mathbb{R} and V′:D2→RV':\mathcal{D}_{2}\to\mathbb{R} satisfy

U(μ)+s E1(μ)≤U′(μ)(μ∈D1),V(ν)+s E2(ν)≤V′(ν)(ν∈D2).U(\mu)+s\,\mathcal{E}_{1}(\mu)\le U'(\mu)\quad(\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{1}),\qquad V(\nu)+s\,\mathcal{E}_{2}(\nu)\le V'(\nu)\quad(\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{2}).

Let α∈R\alpha\in\mathbb{R} be positive, suppose that the function Ψα′:D1×D2→R\Psi'_{\alpha}:\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2}\to\mathbb{R} with value U′(μ)+V′(ν)−α2Wa,2(p#μ,ν)2U'(\mu)+V'(\nu)-\tfrac{\alpha}{2}W_{a,2}(p_{\#}\mu,\nu)^{2} at (μ,ν)(\mu,\nu) is bounded above, with supremum M′(α)M'(\alpha), and let τ∈R\tau\in\mathbb{R} be nonnegative and (μ,ν)∈D1×D2(\mu,\nu)\in\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2} satisfy M(α)−τ≤Ψα(μ,ν)M(\alpha)-\tau\le\Psi_{\alpha}(\mu,\nu). Then

M(α)−τ+s(E1(μ)+E2(ν))≤M′(α).M(\alpha)-\tau+s\bigl(\mathcal{E}_{1}(\mu)+\mathcal{E}_{2}(\nu)\bigr)\le M'(\alpha).

4. (Decreasing the doubling strength) Let α,α′,τ∈R\alpha,\alpha',\tau\in\mathbb{R} satisfy 0<α′<α0<\alpha'<\alpha and 0≤τ0\le\tau, and let (μ,ν)∈D1×D2(\mu,\nu)\in\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2} satisfy M(α)−τ≤Ψα(μ,ν)M(\alpha)-\tau\le\Psi_{\alpha}(\mu,\nu). Then

M(α)−τ+α−α′2 Wa,2(p#μ,ν)2≤M(α′).M(\alpha)-\tau+\tfrac{\alpha-\alpha'}{2}\,W_{a,2}(p_{\#}\mu,\nu)^{2}\le M(\alpha').

In particular M(α)≤M(α′)M(\alpha)\le M(\alpha') whenever 0<α′<α0<\alpha'<\alpha.

5. (Perturbed maximisers) Let m∈Rm\in\mathbb{R} satisfy m≤M(α)m\le M(\alpha) for every positive α∈R\alpha\in\mathbb{R}; by clause 2, m=U(μ0)+V(p#μ0)m=U(\mu_{0})+V(p_{\#}\mu_{0}) is such a number for every μ0∈D1\mu_{0}\in\mathcal{D}_{1}. There are K,B1,B2∈RK,B_{1},B_{2}\in\mathbb{R} with 0≤B10\le B_{1} and 0≤B20\le B_{2}, where KK depends only on δ\delta, b1b_{1}, b2b_{2}, e1e_{1}, e2e_{2} and mm, and BiB_{i} only on KK and Pi\mathcal{P}_{i}, and none of them on α\alpha or τ\tau, with

Wa,1(σ,ρ1)≤B1for every σ∈D1 with E1(σ)≤K,Wa,2(σ,ρ2)≤B2for every σ∈D2 with E2(σ)≤K,W_{a,1}(\sigma,\rho_{1})\le B_{1}\quad\text{for every }\sigma\in\mathcal{D}_{1}\text{ with }\mathcal{E}_{1}(\sigma)\le K,\qquad W_{a,2}(\sigma,\rho_{2})\le B_{2}\quad\text{for every }\sigma\in\mathcal{D}_{2}\text{ with }\mathcal{E}_{2}(\sigma)\le K,

such that the following holds for all α,τ∈R\alpha,\tau\in\mathbb{R} with 0<α0<\alpha and 0<τ<10<\tau<1. There are (μ^,ν^)∈D1×D2(\hat{\mu},\hat{\nu})\in\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2}, a sequence (μk)k∈N(\mu_{k})_{k\in\mathbb{N}} in D1\mathcal{D}_{1}, a sequence (νk)k∈N(\nu_{k})_{k\in\mathbb{N}} in D2\mathcal{D}_{2}, and positive real numbers ckc_{k} (k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}) whose series converges with ∑k=1∞ck≤τ\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}c_{k}\le\tau, such that: E1(μ^)≤K\mathcal{E}_{1}(\hat{\mu})\le K, E2(ν^)≤K\mathcal{E}_{2}(\hat{\nu})\le K, and E1(μk)≤K\mathcal{E}_{1}(\mu_{k})\le K and E2(νk)≤K\mathcal{E}_{2}(\nu_{k})\le K for every k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}; M(α)−τ≤Ψα(μ^,ν^)M(\alpha)-\tau\le\Psi_{\alpha}(\hat{\mu},\hat{\nu}); for every (μ,ν)∈Pρ1a×Pρ2a(\mu,\nu)\in\mathcal{P}^{a}_{\rho_{1}}\times\mathcal{P}^{a}_{\rho_{2}} the series ∑k=1∞ck(Wa,1(μ,μk)2+Wa,2(ν,νk)2)\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}c_{k}\bigl(W_{a,1}(\mu,\mu_{k})^{2}+W_{a,2}(\nu,\nu_{k})^{2}\bigr) converges; and, writing Φ(μ,ν)\Phi(\mu,\nu) for Ψα(μ,ν)\Psi_{\alpha}(\mu,\nu) minus the sum of that series ((μ,ν)∈D1×D2(\mu,\nu)\in\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2}),

Φ(μ,ν)<Φ(μ^,ν^)for every (μ,ν)∈D1×D2 with (μ,ν)≠(μ^,ν^).\Phi(\mu,\nu)<\Phi(\hat{\mu},\hat{\nu})\qquad\text{for every }(\mu,\nu)\in\mathcal{D}_{1}\times\mathcal{D}_{2}\text{ with }(\mu,\nu)\ne(\hat{\mu},\hat{\nu}).
