Elementary Properties of Sublinear Functionals

A sublinear functional vanishes at 0 and satisfies −p(−x) ≤ p(x), and so does every linear functional it dominates; the norm is sublinear; and a sublinear functional bounded by C‖·‖ is Lipschitz with constant C and bounds the linear functionals below it by C‖·‖.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let VV be a real vector space with zero vector 0V0_{V}, and let pp be a sublinear functional on VV.

Value at zero. p(0V)=0p(0_{V})=0.

Reflection. −p(−x)≤p(x)-p(-x)\le p(x) for every x∈Vx\in V.

Dominated linear functionals. If MM is a linear subspace of VV and ff is a linear functional on MM with f(x)≤p(x)f(x)\le p(x) for every x∈Mx\in M, then

−p(−x)≤f(x)≤p(x)for every x∈M.-p(-x)\le f(x)\le p(x)\qquad\text{for every }x\in M.

The norm. If ∥⋅∥\lVert\cdot\rVert is a norm on VV, then ∥⋅∥\lVert\cdot\rVert is a sublinear functional on VV.

Lipschitz bound. If ∥⋅∥\lVert\cdot\rVert is a norm on VV and C≥0C\ge0 is a real number with p(x)≤C∥x∥p(x)\le C\lVert x\rVert for every x∈Vx\in V, then

∣p(x)−p(y)∣≤C ∥x−y∥for all x,y∈V.|p(x)-p(y)|\le C\,\lVert x-y\rVert\qquad\text{for all }x,y\in V.

Bound for dominated functionals. If ∥⋅∥\lVert\cdot\rVert and CC are as in (v) and MM and ff are as in (iii), then ∣f(x)∣≤C∥x∥|f(x)|\le C\lVert x\rVert for every x∈Mx\in M.
