λ-System

A λ-system on a set X is a set of subsets of X that contains X, the complement in X of each of its members, and the union of every sequence of pairwise disjoint members.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let XX be a set.

A λ\lambda-system on XX is a subset L\mathcal{L} of the power set P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) such that X∈LX\in\mathcal{L}; the difference X∖AX\setminus A lies in L\mathcal{L} for every A∈LA\in\mathcal{L}; and for every sequence (An)n∈N(A_{n})_{n\in\mathbb{N}} in L\mathcal{L} whose terms are pairwise disjoint, that is, AmA_{m} and AnA_{n} are disjoint for all m,n∈Nm,n\in\mathbb{N} with m≠nm\neq n, the union ⋃n∈NAn\bigcup_{n\in\mathbb{N}}A_{n}, a set by The Union and Product of a Family of Sets Indexed by a Set, and the Intersection of a Family with an Inhabited Index Class, Are Sets (i), lies in L\mathcal{L}.
