Existence and Uniqueness of the Smallest Convex Superset of a Subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n

Every subset S of RnR^n has exactly one convex superset contained in every convex superset of S, namely the intersection of all convex supersets of S.

Statement

In the setting of Convex Sets in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let S⊆RnS\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}.

Existence and uniqueness. There is exactly one convex subset HH of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} such that S⊆HS\subseteq H and H⊆CH\subseteq C for every convex C⊆RnC\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} with S⊆CS\subseteq C.

Description. This set HH is the intersection of all convex subsets of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} containing SS:

H={x∈Rn: x∈C for every convex C⊆Rn with S⊆C}.H=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:\ x\in C\text{ for every convex }C\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}\text{ with }S\subseteq C\}.
