Maps from Functional Predicative Relations, and Families of Sections

A predicative formula in two set variables defines a relation, a map when it is functional on a class, and every class relation R gives the map u to the set of w in b with (u,w) in R.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let uu and vv be distinct set variables, and let ψ(u,v)\psi(u,v) be a predicative formula whose free variables are among uu, vv and further variables, its parameters, with fixed values as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i); for sets uu and vv, ψ(u,v)\psi(u,v) is read as in Formulas of the Language of Class Theory, Free Variables, Predicative Formulas and Abbreviations (iv). Let (u,v)(u,v) be the ordered pair.

The relation. There is a relation RψR_{\psi} such that for all sets uu and vv: (u,v)∈Rψ(u,v)\in R_{\psi} if and only if ψ(u,v)\psi(u,v).

Maps. Let AA and BB be classes such that every u∈Au\in A has some v∈Bv\in B with ψ(u,v)\psi(u,v), and such that v=v′v=v' whenever u∈Au\in A, v,v′∈Bv,v'\in B, ψ(u,v)\psi(u,v) and ψ(u,v′)\psi(u,v'). Then there is a map f:A→Bf:A\to B with ψ(u,f(u))\psi(u,f(u)) for every u∈Au\in A.

Families of sections. Let AA and RR be classes and bb a set. There is a map f:A→P(b)f:A\to\mathcal{P}(b) into the power set of bb whose value at each u∈Au\in A has as elements exactly the w∈bw\in b with (u,w)∈R(u,w)\in R:

w∈f(u)if and only ifw∈b and (u,w)∈R(u∈A).w\in f(u)\quad\text{if and only if}\quad w\in b\ \text{and}\ (u,w)\in R\qquad(u\in A).
